TBILISI/MOSCOW - Russia said on Monday it was tightening checks on the quality of Georgian wine imports, deepening tensions between the ex-Soviet neighbors after a visit by a Russian lawmaker sparked angry protests in Tbilisi.

The Russian state consumer watchdog, Rospotrebnadzor, said in a statement it was taking the step because of concerns about the quality of imported Georgian wine, but Moscow has in the past used bans on wine imports as a weapon in political disputes with Georgia. The protests in Tbilisi erupted last week, when Russian lawmaker Sergei Gavrilov addressed the Georgian parliament from the speaker’s chair, speaking in Russian.

Police used tear gas and rubber bullets on Thursday to prevent crowds of protesters from storming Georgia’s parliament. Hundreds of people were injured, some seriously.

I didn’t realize predominantly Muslim nations produced wine.

What’s sad is that this report is missing the point that Georgia started a ban first after U.S representatives persuaded them to and Russia retaliated. Georgia depends a great deal on Russian tourism but the west doesn’t care that it’s asking them to shoot themselves in the foot.

Russia should ban everything and everyone from Georgia
