Ulyukayev was freed after serving five years of an eight-year sentence for bribery.

The highest-ranking Russian lawmaker to be jailed since the breakup of the Soviet Union has been released early from prison, where he was serving an eight-year term for bribery.

Ulyukayev left Correctional Colony No. 1 in the Tver region, about 90 miles northwest of Moscow, on Thursday in a Range Rover SUV that was accompanied by two other vehicles without license plates, Radio Free Europe reported. Ulyukayev had been jailed following a December 2017 conviction of soliciting a $2 million bribe from Igor Sechin, the head of state-owned oil giant Rosneft and a close ally of Putin.

Ulyukayev was arrested inside Rosneft's headquarters in November 2016, after Sechin gave him cash inside a brown bag. Ulyukayev denied the charges and said that he had been framed and thought the bag contained a gift instead.

Russia says it repelled Ukrainian attempts to reclaim Snake IslandUkrainian presidential adviser Oleksiy Arestovych said earlier on Tuesday in a YouTube interview that Ukraine was not trying to recapture Snake (Zmiinyi) Island as it was far easier to continue hitting Russian targets there. The island, a small outcrop in the Black Sea, was the setting for one of the landmark exchanges between Ukrainian and Russian forces at the start of the war in late February when Ukrainian border guards told a Russian warship to 'go fuck yourself' after it demanded they surrender. Russia said Ukrainian forces had attempted to retake the island on May 8, the eve of Russia's Victory Day anniversary celebrations over Nazi Germany in World War Two.
