BREAKING: Russia orders troops to withdraw from its border with Ukraine after a massive military buildup that raised alarm from Western Europe to the US.

At the Pentagon, officials said Thursday there was no sign yet of a withdrawal or change in how Russian forces were deployed near Ukraine’s borders or in occupied Crimea.

"The immediate crisis is over for now," said Vladimir Frolov, a Moscow-based political analyst. But he added that Putin may have accomplished what he set out to achieve with the buildup. "That has been accomplished. Russia is also leaving significant forces and heavy equipment at the staging areas near Ukraine’s borders in order to react quickly and forcefully to any large scale use of force by Kyiv in Donbas."
