Russian authorities extend the detention of opposition leader Alexey Navalny in a hastily organized court hearing—despite growing international condemnation over his arrest a day earlier at a Russian airport.

Navalny appeared in a court hearing organized inside a police station on the outskirts of Moscow. It was filmed and then posted online by his lawyers. The lawyers said they were informed about it just minutes before it began. The judge ruled to satisfy a request by police to extend Navalny’s detention until Feb. 15, Navalny’s lawyer, Vadim Kobzev, wrote on Twitter.

A small crowd of a few dozen supporters of Navalny were outside the police station, chanting for his release, in temperatures around -11 degrees Fahrenheit. No reporters were allowed into the court hearing, except for a few journalists from pro-Kremlin channels who were already inside when the hearing began.

“They must immediately release him and ensure his safety,” she said, adding that the EU would be monitoring the situation closely.

The mainstream media made this man popular who in fact before the supposed to be poisoning by order from Putin, he in fact was irrelevant in Russian opposition. He is a Putin critic RIGHT! But the true reason why he was detained is totally ignored.

why did he go back? why not have gone back after JoeBiden is in place to act? there must have been a way to go back with international protection! UN could not have done anything? world needs to act. send in an extraction team to get him and his family out and sanction putin.

Vladimir Putin President of the Russian Federation please leave Navalny ALONE. Start Acting Stateman-like. Russia and the World needs a more Stable and none Paranoid Russia. Fear of Navalny is INEXPLICABLE and OVERBLOWN. ALLOW RUSSIANS FREEDOM as they DESERVE It. Now !

Dude should not have gone back there. He’s not going to be able to lead a movement for political reform in Russia if he walks right into his own death. Unless that’s his plan, to be a martyr. He’s survived at least two attempts on his life, he’s supposed to live. This is madness

Chicken-livered Putin

Not sure why he thought he WOULDNT be arrested. His boasting that Putin was afraid of him really blew up in his face. Sounds like he wants a martyr end. Careful what you ask for!😳

The KGB never changes. Stamp down any sign of opposition and Democracy

Any chance the President of the United States has condemned Russia for this anti-democratic action?

Have any American politicians commented? This is a true opportunity for anti authoritarianists to publicly denounce tyranny. Any takers? No?

Why in the world did he go back to Russia ?

Putin feels he can do anything with impunity. It's attitudes such as this that make unbridled autocracies so dangerous.

There's a man made of iron. Our politicians aught to learn something about honor from Navalny.
