Utilities and startups are joining forces to bridge gaps between U.S. cities with networks like those pioneered by Elon Musk’s Tesla, but earnings remain uncertain
Workers laying concrete for an electric-vehicle station in Waynesville, N.C., part of a buildup across the U.S.Utilities and startups are racing to build fast-charging networks for electric vehicles throughout the U.S. as auto makersRegional alliances are emerging as utilities join with one another—and with charging-station builders and government agencies—to plan the thousands of charging stations needed to bridge the gaps between U.S. cities.
The largest such group, the Electric Highway Coalition—which includes the Tennessee Valley Authority, Duke Energy Corp. and American Electric Power Co. —plans to announce this week that it is more than doubling its utility members to 14, adding Consolidated Edison Inc. of New York, Exelon Corp. and Avangrid Inc. among others, as it seeks to build an EV charging network spanning much of the South, Midwest and East Coast.
More fast-charging stations, which repower a battery in about 30 minutes instead of over a period of hours, are the missing ingredient required to enable an electric version of the American road trip. Current EVs can travel a few hundred miles or less before needing to plug in. , EV proponents worry that many consumers will avoid electric cars. Yet without more EVs, they worry that companies will avoid building enough stations, in what has been dubbed the nascent industry’s chicken-or-the-egg dilemma.
They are catching on fire really
Maybe the manufacturers should build this infrastructure out instead of government…. Novel concept lately ….. Tesla
And at the back a disel generator...
How much does it cost to charge the car?
Not very profitable for recharging stations owners. Cars sit in the stall for 30 minutes instead of 5 -10 minutes. You’ll need more stations, cars are still the same size so you’ll need more area. The math is better for urban areas.

Yeah and if we can solve the Voting Rights attack on this country and get back to rebuilding it it's part of the infrastructure deal that will transform us into a 21st century power again. Duh!
Another reason for the peasants to vehemently support the oil and gas companies, eh ? Cause climate change is a myth, eh WSj.....love how hard you are tryin to keep the 1950s going....love it....
The real game changer - globally - will be next generation batteries
All sources of energy count with an environmental impact. RATIONALIZATION of all processes in all areas is necessary& possible to protect the environment in real terms.
Gas stations need to also change pumps to half gas and half electric.
The hybrid EV still seems the best of both worlds, although ppl who own Teslas swear by them and that the national charging network works for them.
Developing world on EVs would be the game changer for environment, sustainable and health. Yes, fast chargers deployment would certainly mark American EV road trip boom.
Great. The line will only be an 8 hour wait! No thanks.
The issue is grid capacity. If we can add more capacity, you’d see more of these chargers
