We talked to author Rumaan Alam about his brilliant new apocalyptic novel, 'Leave the World Behind'

as G.H., who Amanda rather racistly compares to Washington in the book — in part because they share a last name.spoke to Alam about his writing process, bucking expectations, his inexplicable fear of plane crashes. This particular book began with setting, more than people.

You tell this story from so many different viewpoints. Are you pulling from your own experience? How do you get in this many head-spaces? What’s interesting to me artistically is specifically to ignore that particular burden or challenge or whatever — that expectation that writers who are brown, in my case, or are gay, also in my case, have to write about those issues. It’s boring to me. It’s an unimaginative expectation.

I want to like this novel...but it is annoying how the author shoehorns unnecessarily dense vocab into a S L O W plot (There actually is no plot yet- 4 chapters in and a family has made the drive out to Eastern Long Island and checked into an Airbnb).

Looking forward to the film.
