Rising suicide rates at college campuses prompt concerns over mental health care.

Stanford University has agreed to change its involuntary leave of absence policy, mental health staffing and training to better accommodate students facing mental illness crises, including those who have been hospitalized following a suicide attempt. The decision is the result of a settlement agreement with a group of students who filed a class action lawsuit to reform allegedly discriminatory policies affecting student in mental health crises.

According to the CDC, suicide rates across all ages increased in nearly every state between 1999 and 2016, and suicide rates went up more than 30% in half of states since 1999. "Many college students aren’t taking care of their bodies. Many are experimenting with substances and not eating very well, or sleeping very well, in a way that would support them to meet all these new challenges," Samar said.

Panzer recalled not wanting to get out of bed and said his suicidal thoughts resurfaced during his second year at Columbia. College counseling services face a particular challenge in developing protocols that can effectively triage and recognize students at higher risk. "It would also be good to have a metric to see if colleges can compare themselves to others and themselves," Dr. Jane Pearson, chair of Suicide Research at the National Institute of Mental Health, said in an interview with ABC News.

National suicide prevention organizations have spearheaded peer-to-peer educational campaigns like"Seize the Awkward" and #BetheOneTo, which are providing students with the tools to talk about mental health among their social circles and recognize early warning signs of suicide.

Yes, everyone is going crazy out of the blue, impossible that there could be any sane and rational cause suicides would spike amongst college kids. Because sometimes our brains just simply turn on us with no provocation and make us do crazy things for no reason. Great theory.

The Left ruins EVERYTHING

Better yet find out what’s causing this for sure?

Heartbreaking

Doesn't surprise me unfortunately

Well let’s see, social connections are tenuous at best in high school then a struggle to maintain in college. Pile on a ton of new responsibilities and a brand new environment.... Commence spiral.

This is a world wide issue... look at the youth. They really aren’t making it out the hole.

Awesome!! Darwin

.Liberal indoctrination is depressing.

Suicide is 10th leading cause of death in US (about 50,000). Yet politicians focus on the few deaths caused by “assault weapons”. Yes, they are horrible & tragic. But trying to take away guns is not the answer to the problems in this country. It just makes it seem like they care

This is such a huge lie! Death by suicide occurs to 1.4 % of the population according to the CDC. Increase in 's since 1950 compared to increase of population makes this article a huge false flag. Your get more of anything when you have more people.

When you have been told that the world is ending; that humanity is a plague on the planet; when we promote self and idolatry over faith in something greater than self and hope. This is not surprising but extremely sad

Have two young adult kids, told them educate yourselves and follow your dreams. EACH of their loans are more than our house payment! How can they possibly get GOOD paying jobs, eat, rent, misc. AND get ahead?! They feel so hopeless! NO FRICKEN WONDER!! 😢

parents need to get them out of the house more.

they need more socialization.

This actually very telling. My friends son hung himself in their backyard a few weeks ago. He had just been given a full ride scholarship for golf. It’s just terrible that young adults don’t think it will ever get better.

This might be part of it ! Relying on social media to tell them how to feel what to think what to wear where to eat what kind of food to eat and what sex you should be What color skin you should have ♿

It’s the phones 📱 that they are constantly staring at. Social media. It’s too much stimulus. Too much anxiety. The mind can only take so much

Honestly kids feel isolated because they are convinced they are competing against everyone around them. No one encourages developing relationships anymore.

That could be a small number and still be true. Other than accidents and suicide, people in the physical prime of their lives are very low probability to die any other way.

If Donald trump was your leader, wouldn’t you wanna die ?

For people to take: It's not a question of toughness, taking the easy way out, or attention. They're serotonin, (nor)epinephrine, dopamine, concentrations are so low (or distorted) they essentially view the world in a distorted way. Please don't oversimplify this issue.

😰 This is very alarming 😰

Population control. The Democrats have everyone believing they are going to die soon anyway.

When young white people are told day in and day out that they are the cause of all the problems in the world, it can make them feel bad and lead to suicide.

Well yeah looking at my student loan payment every month makes me want to kill myself too

We have a mental health crisis in this nation and we need to do something about it.

Its not surprising when campuses are now full of radical ideas and alienating actual debate and tolerance

Seems to be a whole lot of mental healthcare needs in political offices around the country but they are made to appear normal...?

A really good article. Thanks for sharing 💕

Liberal media👀 24/7 non-stop Negative reporting👀

They must be Democrats..

yeah no shit honey

Maybe telling young men they are rapists in waiting and that they have white privilege and they need to pay reparations while taking in thousands of dollars of debt is a bad thing. No, it must be Trump?

Stop watching the left media. Cancel your cable. Life will be much better I really feel sorry for the left. It's a pathetic hateful angry life

If colleges existed for 200+ years in the United States without much school provided mental health assistance, why would the lack of such assistance suddenly be causing mass death? When a new problem comes, we should first examine variables that have changed. Not constants.

When a Young Adult Moves away fr Home-There's a Period of 'Adjustment Shock' which often Occurs Weeks or Mo's after they Leave. Parents Have 2 Maintain Close Contact 4 at Least 2 yrs-2 Prevent Anxiety fr Turning in2 Neurosis or Worse. Students should Report Depression Cases!

It's most likely more like the reality of a useless grind setting in. College is a reprieve from work. You finish...now what? You're facing decades of slavery or mad side hustling to stay afloat. Yet we were all told college was some key to finding a career in which you are happy

Find a cure for being a leftist. Tackle the biggest mental health challenge first.

I’d be suicidal if I made the mistake of going to college, too.

While 'they' are looking into mental health, suggest they start at the beginning..outrageous cost of tuition, r & b, junk fees and the current constitutional and economic crisis.

The nihilism of liberalism leads to hopelessness.
