“Small business owners are struggling at record levels trying to get workers back in open positions,” said NFIB Chief Economist Bill Dunkelberg. “Owners are offering higher wages to try to remedy the labor shortage problem. Ultimately, higher labor costs are being passed on to customers.”
Additionally, the majority of small owners said that trying to hire reported few or no “qualified” applications for the positions they were trying to fill in May. Thirty-two percent of owners reported few qualified applicants for their positions and 25% reported none. The business owners cite higher labor costs overall and the lack of quality labor among their top business concerns.
“It’s a complex problem created by Congress. When the benefits run out, people will expect the same money they were making on unemployment. The extra $300 will go away,” said Jeff Kowalczyk, president of, based in Scotch Plains, New Jersey. “You are going to have a workforce that expects a level of pay they won’t get. I don’t blame the workers. Jobs used to be high on people’s priority list, now they rely on the government. Some people haven’t worked for more than a year.
Why do people think that workers should live in poverty so small businesses can stay open? Free markets- compete for labor or go out of business. If you cannot afford to pay your labor, you cannot afford to be in business.
