Rhuigi Villaseñor’s Rhude collection is already a commercial success, with every A-list everything wearing his Los Angeles brand. Last season he upped the ante, bringing his collection to Paris for a debut runway show. That was the plan for his men’s spring 2021 collection, too, until the coronavirus crisis shut down any travel plans. However, being stuck in L.A. seems to have had a great impact on Villaseñor’s work.
The direct homages to American style will draw the eye first, from a corduroy varsity jacket with his signature triangle detailing on the shoulders to a boxy leather bag that riffs on a Marlboro cigarette box, but where Villaseñor really shines is in his more understated pieces. Landing on a boxy, away-from-the-body silhouette, he has crafted some of the most appealing short sleeve shirts of the season, in black leather or breezy linen, with silver snap details.
