Eternals boasts Marvel's biggest worldbuilding yet, literally retconning the history of the universe and human civilization. It has great performances and some exceptional set pieces, but the film's many virtues are ultimately undercut by a host of messy missed opportunities.

, has grand ambitions . It literally gives our planet’s origin story, introduces us to literal gods, and retcons the history of human civilization before our eyes. Ultimately it is a big swing of a film with a lot to accomplish in its runtime, and that alone is no mean feat for any filmmaker.

Conceptually, it’s perhaps Marvel’s biggest story in terms of raw scale in that it boasts the largest MCU worldbuilding outside offranchise at its very best. At the same time, the success of the worldbuilding is unfortunately rather hit-or-miss. It has an unenviable amount to accomplish within a reasonable length, but much of that worldbuilding is achieved through massive, sudden exposition dumps in ways that make it needlessly confusing at times and oddly paced in others.

Visually, the film is a treat with great effects and action choreography, adept production design, and lovely cinematography choices. The Celestials themselves are pictured in an appropriately menacing way, and the massive grandeur and power comes across. At the same time, the Deviants leave something to be desired in design, with the colorful, sinewy design losing some of the menace that intergalactic apex predators should have.

The performances are unsurprisingly exceptional , but some of the strongest performances in the cast are not who you’d expect. Barry Keoghan’s struggles with Eternal inactivity in the face of human suffering is subtle but excellent emotional work. Brian Tyree Henry’s struggle with the complex legacy of intervention in human affairs is also a high point, while Kumail Nanjiani steals every scene he’s in. .
