But forming the BEC wasn’t the end of the line. To make the never-ending laser truly work, the researchers had to make the BEC constant. This can be very tricky, as Popular Mechanics notes. That’s because you not only have to form the BEC, but you have to keep it formed together. Altogether, this allowed the researchers to create a laser that consistently runs. The design is very clever. And, situating the BEC within the reservoir allowed them to keep things replenished and consistently cooled at the same time. This also allowed the laser to run from a more natural process without having to worry about pulsing.
