Distinctively black names are often tied to naming conventions that emerged during the Civil Rights era.
But new research shows that African-American men were given distinguishable names as far back as the Civil War—and unlike today, when modern black names have been linked to discrimination, their historical counterparts were associated with a notable benefit: longer lives.
