“THE REPUBLICAN PARTY will soon be known as the party of health care—you watch,” President Donald Trump declared in March. “We’re coming up with plans.” Alas, like many of Mr Trump’s claims, this one proved untrue. Days later, following conversations with Mitch McConnell, the Republican Senate majority leader, Mr Trump admitted via tweet that his much-touted health-care proposal would in fact be delayed until at least 2021 after “Republicans hold the Senate & win back the House”.
Republican reluctance to embrace health care, despite the president’s best efforts, is understandable. On the one hand, America’s health-care system is woefully dysfunctional: the country spends about twice as much on health care as other rich countries but has the highest infant-mortality rate and the lowest life expectancy . Some 30m people, including 6m non-citizens, remain uninsured.
Today Democrats in Congress will have their say when the House Budget Committee holds a hearing on single-payer health care. Such a system would expand access to medical care and bring down costs by allowing the federal government to negotiate directly with providers. Polls show that Americans like the idea in theory. In practice, however, many are unwilling to accept the necessary trade-offs, including longer waiting times, less access to pricey medical treatments and higher taxes.
There’s nothing dysfunctional about US Healthcare. It’s the best in the world. The dysfunction comes from the people who refuse to take care of themselves and refuse to get help until it becomes a crisis. Socialism and Communists will never outperform the US.
Oh God, Libs always whining and wanting handouts! Once they are born, it is up to the infant to pull itself up by its bootstraps. SMH.
alllibertynews Lifestyle...a giant variable that never gets taken into consideration in comparing county health stats
BaldwinRE And there will be no real change in the near future.
ekonomikanaliz Because, USA spend for its rich minority. Poors health care expenditure is too low.
Republicans, end the corporate tax break for health insurance and add one for individuals. Then we will have a competitive insurance market. Or better yet just do Medicare for All. It would be your best move since ending slavery.
Stop drinking, smoking and doing drugs while pregnant
ashascencio Republicans are struggling to fix America's Healthcare, by destroying America's healthcare. Also keeping pay low. Destroying Social Security. Anything to keep Americans unstable, because then we might demand a raise or benefits for making corps rich.
Bangladesh
Please, Republicans are struggling to break it more
We kill hundreds of thousands of infants in the womb every year. Let’s stop that. That would be a good start.
alllibertynews Get the government TOTALLY out of the health care system. Let it be regulated by free market capitalism. That will fix it faster than any proposal you can name.
DavidforNorCal Almost like we need something that every other modern country has... Like in Sweden... Finland, Norway... Hmm I wonder what that'd be called...
You could have just stopped with Republicans are struggling and called it a day. They're unfit to do anything.
We allow hospitals to charge whatever they want for procedures.
Pietro5266 Let's not get bogged down by the fact that Americans work more, get paid less, and die younger than in any other developed country. We're 1!
This just shows that those lazy infants need to work harder and get jobs that offer better insurance plans.
It's about profit, not results, and will continue to be under anything that at the very least is not single-payer
And overall life expectancy decreasing year after year MaxCRoser DeathsofDespair ref. Anne Case & Angus Deaton
DinaPomeranz Oh but emulating America is what our latest health advisor (Will Warr) to the Prime Minister wants to do.
, and as far as the infant death you can blame that on Planned Parenthood and the murdering Democrats
You think that's because we give free medical care then tens of thousands of Canadians that can't get it in Canada or the hundreds of millions of illegal immigrants that cross the border every day
Does your statistic include all the infants murdered in the womb or immediately after birth?
Because companies such as Aetna, RegenceWA and so many others override doctor's orders if they don't agree, our simply deny coverage. They win either way! MedicareForAll
Bricoleur gop you can’t even get this money saving approach right?
Also, that headline! America's health-care system is not dysfunctional. It's the best in the world. The problem is that *access* to that system is unequal and dysfunctional. It's an important distinction that any honest debate about reform needs to make.
Hi! Did you know our infant mortality rate looks terrible because we count babies other countries don't count?
ddale8 didn't your fact check say this wasn't true regarding spending? What gives 🤔
If your report instead showed that The US had the highest rate of untreated male impotence, we’d get MedicareForAll by next week.
Capitalism by design is about gaining maximum profits. Morality in Capitalistic structures is only injected into the business model if, and only if, industries are in fear of losing profits. Placing our health within Capitalistic structures will NEVER produce optimal results.
So lame and embarrassing for our country! 🤦🏻♂️😓
Didn't CNN CNNPolitics recently say that this wasn't true and that BernieSanders wasn't telling the truth?
Then stop Planned Parenthood .
umairh And Republicans want to destroy the ACA, take away healthcare from the poor, gut Medicare, while they enjoy cadillac coverage.
With all due respect, the Republicans aren’t struggling to do anything.
There are also 39 countries that have a higher life expectancy.
davemcclure The United States MUST transition to a National Health Service. It’s the only way to control skyrocketing costs and ensure proper standards of health care through the country. We are wasting hundreds of billions of dollars annually that we don’t have to waste!
davidsirota Republicans struggle... that is an obvious ludicrous statement. Their plan is to go back to the old way period.
What have the republicans fixed in the past 20 years?
davidsirota 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🇺🇸🤡”Republicans are struggling to fix America’s dysfunctional health-care system.”🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🇺🇸🇺🇸🤡🤡
davidsirota doesn’t the word “struggling” suggest effort?
700,000 people lost health insurance in 2017, sending uninsured rate to 10.2%
Hail Capitalism! It works. For doctors and healthcare corporations.
Without unpacking this statistic further, it only serves a political agenda.
Cancer is not treated. Only death is postponed by mortal chemotherapy applied with no consciousness or remorse by corrupt doctors and pharmaceutical businesses.
Sherrell_Dorsey Very soon they will helping NHS with their magic portion!
I would dispute your caption
They arent struggling to fix it. They profit from keeping it broken.
They aren’t, actually.
And regarding Health Access and Quality (HAQ) the US ranks way behind 5Nordics the Netherlands, Germany, France and almost any OECD economy.
We also rank 31 in life expectancy. We have people dying well before they should because they can’t afford healthcare or medicine.
sonaliranade Obviously. The less the govt gets involved in healthcare, the better the benefits. See Switzerland and Luxembourg. Aren't they a success story? Just disengage.
America is the worst at doing a lot of things.
plane stupid. The money goes to excel-wizards and CEO spree.
Chart comes from OECD, a puppet NGO of the U.N. Therefore data is suspect coming out of the gate. I think you'll find countries with higher infant mortality rates and data from U.S. sources state life expectancy rates are increasing in the U.S..
GOP isn’t struggling to fix US Healthcare. They attempted to repeal Obamacare without a plan to replace it. Some GOP Governors opposed Medicare expansion in their states. They seem to think medical insurance is a market And a tax cut will cure all our ills. JoeBiden
canada has 15% higher taxes and UK about 26% and you wait for cancer treatment in UK for sure Can ,still investigating.
Is it important people think money is more important than health & education?
Obamacare destroyed US healthcare. As intended.
The US system is best, cuz the rest is Socialist....😑
Idk, trump did call out that fat protester. You can't have fat people and free healthcare. Sorry its not possible
We’re “pro-life”! Hahahaha. No, we’re actually pro-death.
GerardAraud They’re not struggling at all. They don’t care. As far as they’re concerned the system is working.
It's past time for medicare for all.
Its the ridiculous prices of anything related to healthcare in USA. Insurances cost way too much and private hospitals etc charge far too much only because insurance companies pay the costs. Giving birth for example costs 100x more in America, still it is more dangerous there.
The infant mortality rate among all races in the U.S. declined about 16% from 2000 to 2014. Non-Hispanic Blacks saw about a 21% decrease during this time period... Healthcare is virtually different from preventive care.
For-profit health care is a failure.
Eaten up by the insurance companies.
Beaucoup de vols et gaspillage !
America uses its public money on doing R&D. Register patents and then sell that patents to private organisations. These private organisations try for ever greening their patents with small small additions and thus cost of drug increases exponentially. Thus drugs are far reach.
If you want to fix the healthcare system, make the ACA minimums the requirement for selling health insurance in the U.S., limit the profit margin on any drug that was developed through government grants, and create a limited public option for those without employer insurance.
You forgot to mention half of that spending is from government.
david__moser Terrible headline, . They’re “struggling” only to defend for-profit deathcare, as they always have.
So what the US did or didn’t do in the early 80s? That’s when they deviate from the other countries?
alllibertynews Don't go triggering the 'anti-socialist' patriots, now. They will fight ya on Twitter for 3 days with no sleep explaining how important it is to allow capitalism to fix it's own problems. 🤣
GOP isn't trying to fix healthcare, they want people to die
That graph does not reflect efficiency in the public health expenditure. For instance Spain's the 6th-7th country with longet life expetectancy, yet it its the 28th in per capita health expenditure. That 's without counting private insurance, which accounts for about 30% more.
I'll eat whatever a Japanese will eat.
I’ve got a few ideas to correct it.
GerardAraud No, Republicans are NOT struggling to fix America's dysfunctional health care system. Their contributors are big pharma, big health insurance companies, doctors and hospitals that do not want to end their profiteering on health care.
Struggling to fix? If anything, they're making it worse and smiling the whole time they're doing it.
Yup, because profits matter more than lives in the US
News flash: Americans eat cheeseburgers nonstop and die early of obesity. America has the best healthcare in the world.
The headline is a joke. The Rs are struggling to fix anything. They are trying to take away what little protections the ACA provides. What make the writer think they're 'struggling'?
Shocking but not surprising. Our health care system is a money pit
Struggling to fix? They are literally not even pretending to care
Bb
That is a shocking info graphic it really is shameful for the most powerful nation on earth, Americans deserve much better than this.
Your article with the headline “Republicans struggle to fix American Health Care System” starts by observing that in fact they’re doing nothing.
TonyNashOnAsia
😂Republicans r struggling You can't struggle if you don't try or even give a sh't & yes Dem's will struggle 2 because it's so f'cked up & complex...it will take something on the order of the moon walk
Other countries measure infant mortality differently, which puts America at a seemingly statistical disadvantage when choosing this wording. This has nothing to do with the level of health care, and everything to do with metrics. Surely The Economist is aware is this.
Democrats want to take care of the sick. Republicans take their credit cards and then deny them medical attention.
rtyson82 Glory of the free market, bay-beeeee!
I'm from Perú and I'm american. America is the name of the continent we all live in. This article is about a contry named USA. With due respect, would you consider writing THAT correctly from now on, so you can help all americans stop this cultural appropriation?
It must be Vicodin
This has been known for YEARS!!
alllibertynews Some, perhaps a lot, of that spending should be classed as recreation and even more just waste.
The US is rapidly descending to third world status. Thanks, Republicans!
alllibertynews Maybe America ought to take a look at every other developed nation and ascertain hw to run a healthcare system that costs less & delivers better outcomes. For profit healthcare is a loser.
Any Democrat who tries something dramatically different may find that they have to spend more political capital than they willing to on this issue, that and face obstruction from CongressionalRepublicans
Great moment in the US as a visitor when i got a sprained foot. one trip to the hospital and 3 x-rays cost $3K USD. Nearly lol'd on the floor. Lucky i had travel insurance. What a shit hole country!
How do you fix rural.
I’m curious as to how other country’s document “death”. Stats are only as good as the data.
Life expectancy when consuming LiW tablets is 110 years!
But does that include nip, tucks, teeth and botox?
Life expectancy is not good. So paying more does not mean better quality. It only shows that the market is distorted.
A logic machine might get the probably wrong conclusion infant mortality is a health care objective in the US
What a lie that headline is. *Democrats* are struggling to get universal healthcare for our fellow Americans. Republicans are struggling to keep insurance companies profitable.
Estados Unidos 🇺🇸 tiene muchas cosas buenas... su sistema de salud no es una de ellas...
I am always amazed at the Economist's ability to missimplify any and all statistics.
Remember when we were promised costs would go down 2,500 for a family of 4 from 2014 levels?
pmagn Are those figures for Britain (without NI) or the UK?
Obviously you don't need to be Einstein to work out why.
The goal is profit, not healthy people
Why do Canadians keep going to the US for care if it's so bad? 60k go to the US each year and climbing.
But the US has the best cancer care, heart disease care, diabetes care, early detection, trauma care, burn care, and wait times.
Their health care system is mediocre all the way around. However, because Americans are in denial about it nothings going to be improved anytime soon.
Can't decide whether to blame Russia or China for this
That's what happens when you bring in millions of people who don't work and make people who struggle to feed themselves pay for it.
The more vaccines the higher the infant mortality rate:
White, black, yellow, red, brown, olive or beige Americans?
