Chris Roberts officially took over as Auburn’s 21st president on Monday, and one of the bigger questions facing his first year on the job is the status of athletics director Allen Greene, who is in the final year of his five-year contract.

“What I can tell you is that I’m looking forward to learning a lot more about our athletics programs,” Roberts said. “Allen and I are looking forward to having several discussions together, where I’m going to get the opportunity to visit and learn a lot about the programs.”

“I love it here,” Greene said last month. “My wife loves it here. My kids love it here. When I got here four years ago, I remember telling a group of alumni that I’ve been an Auburn man my whole life. I just didn’t know until I got here.” Greene took over at Auburn during a somewhat tumultuous time on the Plains. He was hired from Buffalo by then-Auburn president Steven Leath, whose time at the university was short-lived. At the time of Greene’s hiring, the softball program was mired in a Title IX sexual discrimination scandal that surfaced in August 2017, while the men’s basketball program was implicated in the FBI probe that rocked the sport in September 2017.

Greene also helped secure the funding and approval for a new standalone facility for the Tigers’ football program. That state-of-the-art facility is set to be complete this fall, with the program moving into the building after the upcoming season.

Greene was handed the keys to a money pit of an athletic department. He brought in a solid baseball coach. He was able to keep Pearl at auburn and he should be allowed to see his football coach through to success or failure. Extend his contract to match the same dates as Harsin’s

Is this the part where Greene begs for his job because he can’t find one elsewhere?
