has said the response to her feature directorial debut can either “open doors or close doors for more Black female directors,” throwing into sharp relief the double standards in place for creators of color.
“We thought we’d push it back because we didn’t know what the climate of going to theaters would be like,” said King. “And then a couple of months after the pandemic hit, [George Floyd died in police custody], and for all the producers and everyone involved, we were like, ‘This needs to come out now.
Asked whether the film’s release later this year may inform voter turnout in the U.S. presidential election, Leslie Odom Jr., who rose to acclaim after starring in the original “Hamilton” cast on Broadway and plays Sam Cooke in the film, drew parallels with the hit musical and its own political influence in 2016.
Eli Goree, who played Cassius Clay, commended King’s directing as “instrumental” in reminding the actors to find the humanity in the icons they were playing. “It’s easy to get caught up in Cassius…You have in your mind this person you saw your whole life and how they were when you saw them.”
She is very talented, not only as an actor and a director. She has the ability to cut the CEILING for Black women directors. Bravo to her and all other FEMALES DIRECTORS
YNB If she's as good a director as she was acting in Watchmen, the doors should be blown off, never mind just opened.
Casting is key Miss King
YNB Regina King is amazing as an actress, wishing her continued success behind the camera as well
YNB I don’t think that’ll be the case unless it’s a real awards contender. Nia DeCosta’s Captain Marvel and potential Avengers 5 film’s are far more important after Wrinke in time flopped. Like Tim Stories Fantastic 4 all over again
If its good, its good.. if its bad, its bad. Has nothing to do with skin color.
👍🏽👍🏽
Here for it! How exciting!
What kind of headline is this? Her movie will open doors. Y’all weird as hell for this.
womensmediacntr I hate that we internalize this pressure...
she is one hell of a actress!
I'm not reading this or Rt'ing.
Why not there are very good female directors lie kathrin Bigelow.or Barbara Streisand..i m sure there are more....cant think of right now..
This is trash. Regina is an accomplished woman. And this will stand no matter what the numbers say. She is a Black woman. Yes we know that. Her profession and profession alone is what you should be talking about. Where is the article about white women. Y’all trash for this.
.................please direct to me an article where yall say the same thing about white women directors.
MatthewACherry Congrats and good luck to an amazing woman ‼️
I have to admit, I am excited to see this film. As a white middle aged conservative, I’m sure I’m not their target audience but it looks so intriguing! Plus the abhorrent way that even famous black people were treated at the time is a story that should be told.
Wow everything is about race now what a joke Hollywood has become
