Joe Raedle/Getty ImagesThe Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico is seen after Hurricane Maria hit it in September 2017.A broken cable at Puerto Rico's Arecibo Observatory has torn a gaping 100-foot hole in the dish of one of the largest radio telescopes in the world, taking the instrument offline until repairs can be made.
When the cable fell, it also damaged several panels on the Gregorian Dome that is suspended above the dish and houses sensitive receivers to collect signals from space. The statement said it is not yet clear what caused the cable to break and it did not give a timetable for repairs.

This is a radio telescope, mainly used for imaging very distant objects, or very very close NEOs when close enough for radar. Optical telescopes are taking photographs every night searching for asteroids or anything else visible or in infrared etc.
Can we use the telescope to be a satellite for communications?
