Hundreds turned out to protest the legislation in the busy shopping district of Causeway Bay but were met with a heavy security presence. Riot police fired pepper spray into the crowd, kettled and dispersed protesters, and deployed water cannons.During the protest, Hong Kong Police made the first arrest under the new law -- a man who was holding a black flag carrying the words"Hong Kong independence," police said on Twitter. In total, 30 people were arrested under the charges of illegal assembly, violating the national security law, obstruction of police, and possession of offensive weaponry, according to police. Hong Kong is about to be governed by a law most residents have never seen. And it's already having an effect The national security law came into effect in Hong Kong in the lead-up to July 1 -- the 23rd anniversary of the handover of Hong Kong from British rule to China -- and dramatically broadens the powers of local and mainland authorities to investigate, prosecute and punish dissenters.Read MoreIn vague language, the law criminalizes secession, subversion, terrorism, and collusion with foreign powers. People convicted of such crimes can face sentences of up to life in prison.July 1 is traditionally a day of protests in the city but for the first time since handover, police did not give permission to protesters to hold peaceful demonstrations. Despite the threat of stricter penalties, a small number of protesters did turn out chanting and waving flags. Police demanded they stop chanting pro-independence slogans -- they also unfurled a purple flag warning protesters of being in violation of the new law.On June 30, police commanders were told in a training session that anybody seen waving an independence flag or chanting for independence should be arrested, a police source said -- as should anyone found in possession of independence flags. On Wednesday, Hong Kong's top official, Chief Executive Carrie Lam, said the law is a"crucial step to ending chaos and violence that has occurred over the past few months" in the city."The national security law is the most important development in securing ties between China and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region since the handover," she said, framing criticism of the law as"vicious attacks."The stringent new legislation and its 66 articles were kept secret from the public until the law went into effect and appear to offer the government, courts, police and authorities a roadmap to quash any hint of the mass anti-government protests that rocked the city last year. .m-infographic--1593574238721 { background: This shows how China is serious. CNN would be arrested for promoting violent in USA if China were in power here. Name one country do not have Security Law? Send black people and left Democrats to China, let them feel CCP and let them know whose life of matters! Joe China Biden supports this. I mean all this will do is cause more riots/protests in Hong Kong. The world, for the most part, let China do it's own people dirty.

Law and Order. And so? This is bad. Do all you can to support the democracy loving supporters and protestors in Hongkong. HongKongProtests HongKong StandWithHongKong Hong Kong lost the battle. The communists won. Who's next? USA ? In danger, with radical leftism that is destabilizing it. moo moo chirping

This will be USA if trump gets re-elected. Peaceful protesters are NOT the same as rioters and vandals, but still, hundreds of peaceful protests in US streets, had heavily armed riot police manhandling and violating their Const. right to peacefully protest . eg. trumps photo op 以身试法不是找死吗😂 The left be like

这帮脑残,真是肆无忌惮惯了,对国家不认可,对民族不认同,那就麻烦滚出中国的领土,去美爹英爹那里摇尾乞怜吃狗屎吧 Great job! Follow the law of the land or get punished! Look at the law enforcement of Hong Kong Police, compared with the United States police! You can see how kind the Hong Kong police are Yeah, put these roaches into jail. Will the rest of the world stand idly by and see the suppression of Hong Kongs freedoms and democratic rights?

I just wished the demonstraters had found a more subtle way of bringing about change to inequalities in HK society than to trash the parliament buildings and the infrastructure of Hong Kong. This action gave the mainland authorities the opportunity to bring in the new law. Why USA can do it,but china cannot do that.

From criminals' perspective, laws are always 'controversial'. Hong Kong is a part of China, if you don’t agree then please just leave The CCPChina is the second largest economy in world, and it's now threatened by a flag. Lmao. HKSOS kaitlancollins Damn shame. Would not have happened if Trump wasn’t President.

kaitlancollins this is who we should have protested in the streets for, not BLM Black matters kaitlancollins Sleep miss it? sai cnni foxnewsalert guardiantech Hong Kong Police should crack down on all those fake user accounts created by Russia / Israel masquerading as Chinese residence . kaitlancollins This will not end well. 😧

LAW AND ORDER! Imposed? Are u freaking kidding? Hongkong is a part of China, just like California of United States. Caliexit? When China turn on light, roaches in Hongkong run away. Few left is trampled 😘 USA should send its rioters there for a weekend retreat. support Hk police forever bro someone help faze rain

Hong Kong police made their first arrest under a controversial new national security law imposed by China's central justice league less than 24 hours ago, as protests broke out in the city Jumping beam clown! They should create something like NATO against China. They are a bad actor. I will never sympathize with these beasts. Only ruthless bullets and leather whips can maintain the civilization of this country.

This headline reads like a celebration. well done, HK ! Only ruthless bullets and leather whips can maintain the civilization of this country. We are witness to this The covid - 19 killing us, all and the Chinese killing each other, they are of legal age, they do what they want The people of Hong Kong have proved that they are beasts. What the beasts need is a leather whip, a iron chain and a cage. Not democracy and freedom.

Congrats Hong Kong second handover! Well done and great job. Hongkong needs Law and Order to deal with rioters and terrorists Black lives matters Is the division of the USA territory legal in the United States? Late than BBC this time, pal. Maybe because they want Hongkong more? Never Stop Breaking Others. This is the secret. MAGA

Ladies and gentlemen, the world is living in the last days of Democracy, Dictatorship is about to rise again... Well done! The traitors must be punished! Yes, China is asshole. Anyone who defenda it or explains it is a traitor to the US. Which begs the question. Why do so many conservatives like trump make thier shit in China, rather than making it via US jobs?

This authoritarian rule of Hong Kong will never be accepted. Imagine how you'd feel & react after being free your whole life? This will end badly.😥 Disgraceful Normally this would be when the US stepped in but trump cares more about re-election and confederate statues than he does human rights and lives

National security law is not controversial,.it is imposed for you English, you deserve to be arrested You have covered every Republican blackfaxe incident, did you see Alyssa Milano wore blackface? Maybe live up to your commitment for being a real news source Be sure to punish those losers hard. 1 year sentence at least.

Can you breath? see through the lies learn gematria
