In their laboratory-based experiment, Chen, Campanella and their colleagues grew a layer of humancells on scaffolds that divided several dishes into two chambers. They then used enzymes from the stomach and small intestine to digest a plant-based meat alternative and a cooked chicken breast, before adding each digested product to one chamber in each dish.
In the second part of the experiment, the team analysed the digested foods’ peptides, discovering that protein fragments from chicken breast are smaller and more soluble in water than meat-alternative peptides. “In the gut, the peptides need to cross a mucus layer… which serves as a filter… before reaching the intestinal epithelium cells. [We tested protein absorption] without consideration of the mucus layer,” the pair say.
Despite their results, the team maintains that plant-based meat alternatives are probably a good protein source.
It does lead to deficiencies😂why is everyone stupid now
Ill stick to real meats, not this plant garbage.
If its not real then it's bad for your body in general like all fake preserved 'food' Instead of creating fake food maybe try to conserve real food?
2% hardly a game changer is it. I’ll continue not eating meat. Plus most plant based get their protein from other sources. Fake meat is the vegan version of junk food.
lol we know.
2% less absotption So eat 2% more.
Refuse
Yummy! I can't wait!...NOT!
coonavass There should be a big study done on this and also looking at people with compromised digestive systems, to find out exactly the effect of a fully plant based diet.
It might give you man boobs if your a male. Soy is known for its ability to mimic estrogens.
It is not 'maybe' but 'is', and it is well known for decades that plant proteins are worse absorbed and have poorer essential amino acid composition, see DIAAS. And yes it will lead to deficiency if u don't compensate by increasing quantity.
What a surprise... That is why it is better to eat non-processed things.
Unknown but “let’s try it” like the kid shots
A food alternative isn’t food. It’s an alternative lol.
If it’s not real, it’s garbage.
Big Food has experimented on humanity long enough. The sugar, transfats, and low fat scandals are enough. We don't need more junk imposed on us.
A 2% difference seems minor
How well does protein absorption from natural wheat/soy compare to the wheat/soy that has been processed into 'meat'? Is it the same or is there a decline due to the processing?
May be. Strong case. And of course it’s nonsense.
I enjoy eating my plant-based 'meat' with a side of meat-based 'vegetables'.
Let’s experiment on human being more so we know more, whether or not it is a smart idea to consume.
One day we will stop pop science and present the facts. The facts are that humans eat meat and kill to eat and that vegetarianism veganism are respectable individual choices but not a valid alternative to anything.
ThemysciranJZ Of course it will lead to nutritional deficiencies. That's why those that eat meat alternatives have to take multiple supplements.
🙄 you can already see the deficiencies in 'brains'. Just read twitter 🤪
How unsurprising to anyone who knows anything about nutrition.
Taking away natural food and replacing it with a chemically processed/created product is in no way a better option for us or the planet. We need to live in harmony with the planet not create ways to build an illusion that we can continue excessive consumption
So just eat more of it.
What concerns me with biotech food is that it does not contain all memory that otherwise is stored and passed. Knowledge that we don’t know is useful for our system might be left out somewhere. Its great to have alternatives. We need to. But we should always mind the unknown.
We tried the taco crumbles. We all got stomach cramps & diarrhea. We won't be trying anymore.
You don't say.
Side note: Eating chickens is the most common source of Salmonella poisoning. ~ 90 percent of retail chicken showed evidence of contamination with fecal matter.
Plant-based 'meat' is poison. It's over processed and full of unhealthy oils. Just eat vegetables ffs
It’s not good for you like most crp the FDA says is safe
It’s unknown? Or it’s not good for profits to make that claim out right?
The healthiest longest lived people had low (by today's standard) intake of protein.
Looks like what they ate in the real world in the first Matrix. There's a future to aspire to
I am glad that you have discovered discovered it now!!!
VeganRecovering Known this for years . Just lift weights and switch between the two
Just eat real meat
Just eat the soybeans and spare the planet the wasted energy and chemicals from trying to make it appear meat-like.
katybeebee12 It will be poisonous....
No way!! Protein from fake meat won’t absorb well Go figure!!!
SBakerMD
not an expert on this, but surely by the time protein reaches the intestine it's been broken down into amino acids? why would these amino acids not be absorbed so well if they come from plants? The intestine will absorb all amino acids, won't it?
Mmhh...
Science is dead
If it cannot be absorbed how can the nutrition act in the body!
Humans eat meat. End of story. We should focus on improving farming practices.
No shit
Eating a diet of only rabbit can result in malnutrition. My guess is this would too.
derp
We know
Well considering it’s also devoid of fat soluble vitamins, how could it not cause deficiency
I thought we knew this literally years
narrator: they did cause nutrient deficienies.
It causes cancer. I guarantee it.
Lol
Perhaps over time you develop a gut biome that solves that.
From the article: 'about 2 per cent less protein from the plant-based meat alternative had transferred through the gut cells, compared with protein from the chicken breast.' 2% diff
This could be a nytimes headline. DougJBalloon
we knew that already though i thought..
Problably won’t lead to deficiencies since it’s a macro nutrient but it’s an amazing field for enrichment by selective breeding.
No shit, that stuff is full of nasty chemicals and bad shit for you
