After the Senate parliamentarian ruled that the provision could not be a part of the reconciliation process, a procedural shortcut that Democrats are using to pass Covid relief without needing any Republican support, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders introduced an amendment to try and have the minimum wage increase included in that process.
In the lead up to Friday's vote, progressives had launched a public and private pressure campaign trying to convince the Biden administration to overturn the Senate parliamentarian's decision to strip the $15 minimum wage from the Covid package because they believed it was the best way to get their goal of an increased minimum wage realized.
