President Trump decided not to move forward with the ban on flavored e-cigarettes—fearing potential job losses

President Donald Trump backtracked on his plan to ban flavored vape and e-cigarettes. The reason cited by thePresident Trump held a press conference in September and announced that he would enact legislation to require flavored e-cigarettes be banned from the market, due to the growing health-related epidemic believed to be caused by vaping, including severe lung disease. First Lady Melania Trump, daughter Ivanka Trump and White House advisor Kellyanne Conway strongly advocated for the ban.

Therefore, it was surprising when Trump took up the cause of banning flavored e-cigarettes, particularly Juul products. Trump said he was concerned over the the health issues reported related to the millions of teens and young adults vaping. Tackling the fast-growing usage of vaping and the associated reported health risks seemed like a smart move.

Trump tweeted that he’ll be meeting with vaping industry representatives, medical professionals and others “to come up with an acceptable solution to the vaping and e-cigarette dilemma.” He may try another strategy, such as seeking legislation to raise the minimum federal age for buying tobacco products from 18 to 21. Trump could also try to enact measures to prevent teens from gaining access to and purchasing vaping-related products.
