by WaPo’s Heather Long and Andrew Van Dam: “In many ways, the gap between the finances of blacks and whites is still as wide in 2020 as it was in 1968, the year the nation enacted the Civil Rights Act in response to years of unequal treatment of African Americans in nearly every part of society and business. In the decades since, white wealth has soared while black wealth has stagnated.

by Richmond Times-Dispatch’s Mel Leonor: “Gov. Ralph Northam on Thursday announced the imminent removal of a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee that sits on Richmond’s Monument Avenue, issuing a rebuke to Confederate glorification. This is what we value the most. That’s just not true anymore,’ Northam said Thursday. ‘In Virginia, we no longer preach a false version of history, one that claims the Civil War was about state’s rights … No one believes that any longer.

by WSJ’s Harriet Torry: “U.S. exports and imports both posted their largest monthly decreases on record amid coronavirus-related shutdowns around the world.from March. Both marked the largest month-over-month declines since record-keeping began in 1992, the Commerce Department reported Thursday. The declines left the U.S. with a larger deficit in trade of goods and services. The foreign-trade gap expanded 16.7% from the prior month to a seasonally adjusted $49.41 billion in April.
