The police chief said the officer who fatally shot Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old Black man, in a Minneapolis suburb mistakenly believed she was using her Taser and not her gun

BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn.—A 20-year-old Black man died after a police officer appeared to accidentally shoot him during a traffic stop in a suburb of Minneapolis on Sunday, the Brooklyn Center police chief said Monday.

The shooting sparked protests, looting and clashes with police into Monday morning, according to state and city officials. The man who died was later identified as Daunte Wright. At a press conference on Monday, Tim Gannon, Brooklyn Center’s police chief, showed body-camera video that showed police approaching Mr. Wright’s car. Mr. Wright exits the car and then gets back in, as police try to pull him back out. Another officer can be seen pointing a gun at Mr. Wright and saying repeatedly that she was going to use her taser. The car then speeds away and the officer can be heard saying, “Holy shit, I shot him.

Chief Gannon said he was considering it “an accidental discharge that resulted in the death of Mr. Wright.” He said he believed that the officer accidentally used her gun instead of a taser, which should have been used as officers are trained to do. Chief Gannon said that he released the video because he felt he wanted to be transparent and to show respect to Mr. Wright’s family. “It was very important for me to get that video out as quickly as possible,” he said.

OMG!! If this is true, it’s totally unacceptable!😡

In the video she pulls a gun out and tells “taser taser taser!” ...and fires a single shot and drops her gun and yells “I shot him.” So I don’t think it’s a lie... but unfortunately he is dead because she made an error and she will have to answer for that.

Where have I heard that excuse before Anyone? I'm sure somewhere another cop has used that excuse for killing an unarmed man.

A judge should mistakenly forget she’s a cop and charge her with murder.

Then maybe, just maybe she doesn’t need to be a cop .. Or that some kind of reform needs to happen.. How about this all cops should process a law degree.. as well as a degree in psychology and sociology.. We as a people might have better out comes.

That makes literally no difference. It's negligent homicide. The citizens invested money so that you could be trained to know the difference. Not too mention the resulting damage to the discourse between police and black citizens in the Minneapolis are. Plus, it's probably BS.

This is the wildest take for damage control I've ever seen.

Just amazingly stupid!!!! Let's be careful out there.
