Members of Poland’s LGBT community say they are feeling angry and afraid after President Andrzej Duda won reelection in a divisive and bitter campaign that cast their rights movement as a dangerous “ideology.”

The world has been making progress slowing the spread of HIV. Russia has been moving in the opposite direction.

But the mood had changed dramatically in recent years under the ruling Law and Justice party, which has cast LGBT rights as a foreign import that threatens Poland’s national identity. The backlash included many local governments, particularly in the conservative southeastern areas of Poland, which declared themselves to be “free of LGBT ideology.” It was a mostly symbolic gesture but it was one that left many in the LGBT community feeling unwanted and unsafe, particularly in small towns where they already felt more vulnerable. One third of all people in the nation of 38 million now live in these self-declared “LGBT free zones.

Poland’s Nationalist President Duda Narrowly Wins Second TermPoland’s nationalist President Andrzej Duda narrowly defeated his liberal challenger to clinch a second term, a razor-thin election whose results spoke to the European country’s intense political polarization. I'm shocked that Poland, a nation who suffered horribly from Nationalism in WWII, would elect a Nationalist leader. Nothing good, historically, comes from this extreme ideology. You might as well elect a terrorist. Both extremists. Both use similar tactics to push their agendas! Dying polish demokracy Well done, Poland!
