People who can tip 50 percent. Photo: Noam Galai/Getty Images In a better world, our country’s response to the coronavirus wouldn’t have been bungled, the pandemic would be under control, and businesses like restaurants and bars would have been able to close thanks to a robust safety net and actual, substantive relief.
So if you go eat a restaurant — or order delivery or takeout for that matter! — then there are two things you should absolutely do. Wear a mask and tip at least 50 percent. “50 percent!” you may gasp. “That’s half the cost of my meal!” Yes, and it’s the bare minimum you can do if you decide you must eat a burger al fresco or get tacos delivered.
Why? Because restaurant workers have been made to keep working, to put their health on the line, in an industry that didn’t pay them enough to begin with; workplace abuse is rampant; and health insurance is elusive at best. These people are quite literally risking their lives so you can have a more convenient meal — you should never forget that.
Tip at least 50 percent. Tip 75 percent. Tip 100 percent. What’s stopping you? Do you need to save that money for the vacation to Saint-Tropez you’re planning on taking once this is all over? If you can afford to go to a restaurant right now and have a leisurely meal — because you don’t need to save as much money as you can? — then, yeah, you can afford it.
chrisecrowley Ok, even this is too ridiculous to agree with & my whole life’s work has been hospitality. While tipping is a very polarizing topic & needs to be addressed, this article has diluted the argument of a real need. Most reading will scoff at the notion, reaffirming their 0 tipmindset
chrisecrowley Might I add, don’t linger? If a restaurant is only able to put out 4 tables, please don’t commandeer one to catch up on the last 4 months. Order with your mask on, eat, tip nicely and move on!
chrisecrowley you do realize that just about everyone is really struggling right now - they've been out of work for 4 months - eating out will be a stretch and they will tip as much as they can - you start pushing a 50% tip - there won't be any customers ...
chrisecrowley The pressure to pay the employees is pushed on the customer- this is crazy. Let’s just pay the employees more and go with a no tipping system. 50% is insane. I would say 18% is just right. Maybe even 15%. On apps now I see 20, 25, up to 50% tip. This is not sustainable!
chrisecrowley Lol shut up
chrisecrowley Please BLOW ME!!!
chrisecrowley Why not up it to 75%? Hell, show em how serious you really are and insist on 100%!!!
chrisecrowley Grub Street is an annoying scold
chrisecrowley 50%!? I guess I’m staying at home and cooking. I’ll Bbq, give you a bill and expect payment + a 50% tip. So I order $100 meal for my fam. I should give $150. You’re out of your mind!
chrisecrowley You realize everybody is taking a hit during this pandemic, both the delivery guys and the people ordering the delivery? I would advocate to tip generously if you can, but this lede is a hard NO
chrisecrowley Why am I tipping 50%? I didn’t read the article and I don’t have to. I have been tipping 20% and can’t get a fork or napkins. FOH.
chrisecrowley This is beyond stupid. I doubt that he tips more than 20%. I am so mad with this article, I lost my job in April and I’m still jobless as most of my peers. Mr Crowley, pardon ma Français, go fuck yourself (with the mask on )
chrisecrowley
chrisecrowley 50%?! That’s insanity. This is backwards. We should be advocating living wages for restaurant workers and a movement away from tipping all together. Someone’s livelihood shouldn’t depend on diner generosity. This also helps with tax fraud.
chrisecrowley I have no intention eating a restaurant. Never met anyone who has.
chrisecrowley lol, what are these tweets for the affluent class only?
chrisecrowley Or the owner should get funds from its *state* with all the taxes that we all paid (right?). But off course I have to over pay 50% cause leaders wanna steal our $$...? WTF
chrisecrowley If I ate a restaurant, I would tip 50%, certainly.
chrisecrowley I understand the sentiment here but the problem with NYC currently and gentrification are wealthy whites trying to tell the city’s residents how to live. Restaurants shouldn’t be reserved for a rich elite. People should wear a mask, tip as well as they can, and be allowed to live
chrisecrowley Okay then- who needs to have the restaurants come back anyways? Employee 5 serves or the 1 who will take care of the 2 tables who will tip 50% 🙄
chrisecrowley What a terrible take. Lots of people going out to eat are also struggling. Tip what you can. They are very happy that you are giving them your business.
chrisecrowley If I go eat a restaurant, they should tip ME. But yes, if you’re eating out, TIP. And wear a goddamn mask.
chrisecrowley Before or after tax....
chrisecrowley Haven’t been out in a while but I’m not gonna eat a restaurant I promise
chrisecrowley The train moves, not the station. If the service is good, there’s tip. If the service isn’t good, there’s no tip. Very simple. Also in NY, the food comes out to be about $80-100 for 2 people). Your bright idea says we should pay pay *at least* $50 on top. Not happening
chrisecrowley “Eat a restaurant?”
chrisecrowley I’m making 30% less. Since BLM started I haven’t been able to find free lance jobs as a journalist bcs I am not a POC (even though I’m latin). There is a huge deteactment to what is ok and what it’s not right now. Asking for a 50% tip is idiotic.
chrisecrowley I mean... can you make a better case on NOT going to restaurants? I get it, I hate how this is affecting the industry and the people who work in it. But the idea of having to tip 50% on top of risking my health is just a - no.
chrisecrowley Here. For the people who don't seem to want to click on the link and actually read the piece.
chrisecrowley This kind of thinking mainly benefits waiters, while the cooks, dishwasher and back of house - who work twice as hard as waiters btw - only get minimum wage. Lets lose tipping and pay everyone a well deserved wage!
chrisecrowley So those of us with little money are now required to support restaurant workers, because they have little money. I don’t think so. They will get the tip they earn when dealing with me. I married a waitress and probably already tip more than most, due to empathy.
chrisecrowley 50%?
itsa_talia chrisecrowley hmmm, what class of people does this exclude from eating outside of their tiny NYC apartments?
wagatwe chrisecrowley Did you eat your proofreader too?
chrisecrowley Or, America could implement a fair wage structure in its hospitality industry where the value of labour is included in the total cost on the menu, I dunno.
chrisecrowley This has got to be a joke
chrisecrowley at least 50%, eh? Why not 80 or 90%? Why not just give them all my money? You're nuts
chrisecrowley Also do not forget your hairdressers and barbers, thanks!
chrisecrowley Seemingly, many of these worthies avoiding masks in public space. Citizens of the richest Country in wealth; but callous in public conduct!
chrisecrowley Ha. Please don’t tell me how much to tip.
chrisecrowley Or just eat at home and don’t go to to restaurants. Then there’s no tip at all. No jobs. Happy? Or find the middle ground and tip 25% or 30%? Extremes are bad for everyone.
chrisecrowley
chrisecrowley Like most people can afford to tip 50%, even in the best of times.
chrisecrowley You posted this again I guess that restaurant is really tasty. Get a damn editor.
chrisecrowley
chrisecrowley Stop overreacting!
chrisecrowley And...you should make sure you have no typo's before posting.
chrisecrowley Yeah...right. After you.😐
chrisecrowley If I'm expected to tip 50%, I'll pretty much stop eating out. It's already a luxury I can't afford too often unless it's pizza.
chrisecrowley At least 50%? Why not 80? Why bother eating at all when you can simply give your money to servers? Why pray tell do they deserve all my money? This is stupid.
chrisecrowley For extra conscientiousness, have your server dump your entrée into your mask...…..for some fine in-mask-trough-style eating!!
chrisecrowley This is the second editorial mistake since your “June 31” post
chrisecrowley I like this idea.
chrisecrowley Maybe this article shouldn't be behind a paywall? There may be good reasons why I should tip 50%, but I guess I won't be finding out what they are
onesarahjones chrisecrowley If you’re out of work and can’t leave your house to get food, please use your last few dollars to tip 50%
chrisecrowley And why is that? Charities, which many appropriately donate to and fund are for the poor and underprivileged. Restaurants are for dining. Set the prices and take your chances!
chrisecrowley Was that restaurant tasty? Get an editor. You’re supposed to be professional.
chrisecrowley With what money
chrisecrowley Legislate for a higher minimum wage so it’s not up to customers to tip. Not rocket science!
chrisecrowley Instead of putting servers against customers- try paying people a living wage given the markup on food. Stop the tipping nonsense.
chrisecrowley Unemployed people still have to eat. Sorry
chrisecrowley Not everyone can even if they want to ... That's far fetched but doesn't sound unexpected from you as a magazine. U're banana
