Piers Morgan quips Simone Biles has 'taken his advice' as she announces Olympics comeback
Piers Morgan has been vocal about disagreeing with Olympian Simone Biles' decision to withdraw from several events during the Tokyo Olympics. When it was announced that she would be competing on Tuesday the bolshy presenter took credit for her decision
The 24-year-old, who is the most successful US gymnast in history, announced she was withdrawing from some events in the tournament to focus on her mental health. And on Monday it was shared that the Olympian will be taking part in Tuesday's balance beam final via the USA Gymnastics' Twitter account.
They posted: "We are so excited to confirm that you will see two U.S. athletes in the balance beam final tomorrow - Suni Lee AND Simone Biles!! Can’t wait to watch you both!" After the news broke, Piers took to his own Twitter feed to gloat that the medal winner had 'taken his advice' before dubbing her a 'champ.'
Former Good Morning Britain star Piers penned on the micro-blogging site: "UPDATE: Simone has taken my advice and will compete in tomorrow’s Beam final. Good luck, Champ @Simone_Biles."Alongside the message he re-tweeted the post he uploaded on July 28 that read: "You can either listen to snowflake Twitter, @Simone_Biles - or listen to me. You're a great champion, & great champions get back on their feet when they get knocked down. So, re-engage in these Games, win Gold, & inspire with the power of resilience not resignation. Go for it." headtopics.com
Last week, Piers took to Twitterto voice his fury at the decorated gymnast’s decision to put her wellbeing first. “Are ‘mental health issues’ now the go-to excuse for any poor performance in elite sport? What a joke,” he raged.“Just admit you did badly, made mistakes, and will strive to do better next time. Kids need strong role models not this nonsense.”
He continued his controversial opinions in his column for the Daily Mail, writing: "Sorry Simone Biles, but there’s nothing heroic or brave about quitting because you’re not having ‘fun’ – you let down your team-mates, your fans and your country."
Morgan was heavily criticised on social media for his remarks about Simone and several well-known faces called him out, including Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Denise Welch.Writer David Gardner also hit out at Piers on social media by writing: "Piers Morgan has repeatedly defended Paul Gascoigne during his mental health struggles. But he won’t extend the same sympathy to Naomi Osaka, Meghan Markleor Simone Biles. I wonder why."
Morgan called Osaka an “arrogant spoiled brat” and “petulant little madam” for withdrawing from the French Open, and quit his job on Good Morning Britain after he said he didn’t believe Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, had suicidal thoughts. Read more: Mirror Celeb »
