Piers Morgan moans he can't taste wine after catching Covid at Wembley
The former Good Morning Britain presenter revealed he had caught the virus after attending the Euro 2020 finals with his three sons earlier this month. In his latest Daily Mail column, the 56-year-old said he was double jabbed and tested negative before the game and “kept telling myself, I’ll be fine”.
But in the days after, Piers was burning up, started having random extreme sneezing fits and was the "roughest he's ever felt" leading to his diagnosis on July 13.The outspoken media personality – who said at one point his voice “now sounds like Barry White” – has largely recovered and didn’t have to seek hospital treatment.
One thing he can’t abide though is not being able to taste his favourite tipple – wine.Piers wrote that on July 18 his fever had gone and he was feeling a lot better. When his wife, journalist Celia Walden, asked if he wanted a glass of wine, Piers' response was “God, yes.” headtopics.com
“But when I sipped the 2005 Chateau Batailley, normally one of my favourite clarets, I couldn't smell or taste anything,” he said.“In fact, it was like drinking slightly rusty water. I was shocked and bemused, as I've had no problems tasting food or drinks like tea or coffee so far.
“So, I tried another sip – but nothing, again.“This, for anyone who knows my love of good wine, is one of my worst nightmares.”The controversial TV personality - who spends hundreds, if not thousands on vino - said his father couldn’t taste wine for eight months after his parents caught Covid last year.
Piers continued: “He [dad] said the only upside was he could buy a £3 bottle of plonk and pretend it was Chateau Latour.”This prompted Piers to get in touch with his doctor to jokingly say there had been a “catastrophic deterioration” in his condition.
The doctor’s advice was to "avoid good wine".The presenter said he even texted his TV wife and former Good Morning Britain co-star Susanna Reid to say “I can’t taste wine.”Susanna jokingly told him it was a "disaster" but that he'd potentially save money and lose weight by knocking the drinking on the head for a while. headtopics.com
