Houston Astros catcher Martin Maldonado during batting practice before the start of a MLB baseball game at Minute Maid Park on Friday, April 28, 2023 in Houston. The Astros did not come out on top in the first rematch of the 2022 World Series, losing Friday’s series opener against the Phillies 3-1 at Minute Maid Park.
Astros lefthander Framber Valdez logged a quality start. Phillies right fielder Nick Castellanos flashed his defensive skills. World Series MVP Jeremy Peña and Kyle Schwarber mashed home runs. Valdez hurled seven innings and struck out three batters while yielding three runs and eight hits, surpassing the six hits he allowed over two World Series starts against Philadelphia. Although he worked around traffic in each inning he threw, and gave up four extra-base hits, Valdez did not issue a walk and induced two double plays.
