, the legendary studio revolutionary of the ’60s and ’70s who ended his life imprisoned for a 2003 murder, has died. He was 81.
The resounding flop of his 1966 magnum opus, Ike & Tina Turner’s “River Deep, Mountain High,” threw his career off track, but he rebounded with a controversial remix of the Beatles’ “Let It Be” and productions for John Lennon and George Harrison. In 1958, Spector scraped together $40 for a Gold Star session with his vocal trio the Teddy Bears, which included friends Marshall Leib and Annette Kleinbard. A breathy ballad, with lyrics inspired by the inscription on the tombstone of Spector’s father, was recorded; issued by Dore Records, “To Know Him Is to Love Him” reached No. 1 that fall, selling an estimated 1.4 million copies.
Spector cracked the top 20 in 1962 with the Crystals’ “There’s No Other ” and “Uptown” but vaulted to No. 1 with the vocal group’s ode to teen outlawry “He’s a Rebel.” By the time the latter record hit the apex, Spector had bought out Sill’s interest in Philles and established his signature production sound — immense, percussive, densely orchestrated and over-the-top.
Philles struck major paydirt for the last time with the Righteous Brothers. The blue-eyed soul duo of Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield had recorded without distinction for Moonglow Records. But they scored immediately with Spector in 1964 with the huge No. 1 smash “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’” — BMI’s most performed song of the 20th century. It was succeeded in rapid order by “Just Once in My Life” , “Unchained Melody” and “Ebb Tide” .
It would take a few years for Spector’s career to reignite. In the interim, after divorcing first wife Annette in 1966, he married the Ronettes’ Ronnie Bennett. In 1969, Spector took a wordless cameo as a dope dealer in Dennis Hopper’s “Easy Rider.” A production deal with A&M landed him the No. 13 hit “Black Pearl” by Sonny Charles & the Checkmates in 1969.
This is the correct headline
He can rot in hell.
Phil won’t be missed ...
anblanx Interesting how he's always headlined first as a music producer & murderer second.
Should have flushed the cocaine and kept the gun holstered, Phil. Your lunacy forever darkens your legacy. R.I.P. LanaClarkson
Stunning news
Girl bye you piece of sh*t murderer.
Remember that time he was convicted of murder?
RIP PHIL Spector you are a legend
Jesus Christ people, it is absolutely possible to hold two seemingly contradictory ideas in your head at once, in fact it’s the hallmark of maturity. He is a murderer AND an amazingly accomplished person. You don’t have to shame a dead person, because he’s DEAD.
A strange man.
Thank you for an accurate headline, Variety. Lana Jean Clarkson: say her name.
Rip🙏🏻🙏🏻
I think you should have put murderer before wall of sound music
Lmao
Longtime abuser and eventual murderer dead in prison.
'Convicted murderer Phil Spector has died in prison.' Fixed that for you.
Could you please help me overcome severe schizophrenia ? I am trying to get treated at one of the wellness Rehab for 1-2 yrs for complete healing.I need to raise $400K to bear the Rehab cost etc. Please help & donate generously to account in picture. All help appreciated. Thanks
One less weirdo in the world.
Eh. A true “musical genius” but a cold-blooded murderer who lived far longer than his victim, undeservingly. Interesting how we perceive people based on their artistic abilities vs. their personhood.
He was a genius. It is important to differentiate between the artist and the person...
His version of the let it be album is 🚮
cool
Hate him or love him....”Imagine”, “Unchained Melody”, “Let it Be”? 🤣
A mean mean man.
is the only headline I've seen so far that tells or like it is, music producer and murderer.
Spin magazine left out the murdered part. Thank you for reporting the truth shame on you SPIN
Recuerdo el cover que hizo en su momento Amy Winehouse 'to know him is to love him' es hermosamente triste. Rip.
Forgot to mention the sexual assault and murder conviction. But yeah, great music producer or whatever.
Responsible for creating one of the most notable sounds in music. Do you realize how much music he has created and who has used his technique still today? You want to talk about murder talk to someone else.
He was a musical genius and sadly, a very flawed individual. RIP. PS: no relation
With all the shit he did, he lived a long life
Just slipping “murderer” in there like it’s not the most important
'Sensational' murder.
What an epitaph.
How bad was his music that it was listed before murder?
Attempted rapist of 5 different women, threatened them with guns when they rejected him. He killed 1 of them. Serving a 2-decade murder sentence, would have gotten out in 3 years. Who gives a shit about his musical accomplishments, Devin Townsend is the true king of wall of sound
Go to hell And say hi to Art Briles when you get there
Got the credits backwards.
Phil Spector, Murderer, Dies at 81.
