Perspective: Maybe we haven’t let the coronavirus feel personal enough yet

That thought wakes me up at 2:43 one morning. I know because I glance at my phone, careful not to wake up my husband or the lump of a child between us.

Those are never the kinds of coughs he gets. He gets barking coughs, the kind that sound as if he’s trying to haul up something heavy from deep down inside him. They rattle his whole 50-pound body — KWOOH, KWOOH, KWOOH.His pediatrician told us once that he has narrow airways and that he should eventually grow out of these types of coughs. So, when I hear it on a recent afternoon, the sound isn’t what alarms me. It’s that he’s coughing again so soon after just getting well.

I suspect he probably has allergies now. We’ve been spending a lot of time in our backyard, which is suddenly blooming with all the flowers my husband planted as seeds.Even so, I check his temperature now and then. I also wake up every time I hear him coughing in the night and stay awake long after he has grown quiet. That’s not because I don’t think there is plenty to worry about. It’s because I know there is.

I thought of my other sister and her family in Texas. She tries to take care of everyone, always, and I hoped she would try a little less this time, if it meant her staying safe. And then I finally thought of my own little family unit.

Listening to them right now is an instant dose of serotonin — a flashback to a patch of sunny teenage joy I have done a deep dive into the NSYNC concert performance archives on YouTube this week and honestly, it soothed me. I’m glad I’m not alone. Somehow, IDT the 5SOS fans are gonna love the group being called 'boy band 5 Seconds to Summer' 😬 No.

Perspective | Homeschooling during the coronavirus will set back a generation of childrenPerspective: Homeschooling during the coronavirus will set back a generation of children That’s ok. They can always become journalists. It will set *some* kids back. My son has made more measurable academic progress being home than he made in 6 months of kindergarten. He's doing 1st and 2nd grade work now. But I see many parents looking for the magic app to sit their kids in front of all day. Some doing even less Translation: 'These kids will be set back years in leftist indoctrination.'
