As the country navigates efforts to reopen while simultaneously quelling the coronavirus pandemic, Americans are feeling fairly optimistic about their finances. But jobs are still a major concern, dulling some of the shine on consumer confidence this week.
A growing majority of Americans think the economy will recover quickly once pandemic restrictions are relaxed, according to this week’s survey. Fifty-six percent of respondents agreed with that sentiment, while 39% disagreed—a 10% shift toward optimism for economic recovery since April. But this optimism is undercut by a growing concern about employment.
As the holiday shopping season approaches, seasonal hiring waves may impact job confidence. Amazon has said it will hire 100,000 workers through the holidays, and Walmart announced this week it will hire 20,000 to work in order fulfillment. Forty-three percent of respondents said they, a family member or someone they know lost their job in the past six months due to economic conditions. Meanwhile, 46% said it’s likely they or someone they know will lose their job in the next six months because of the economy. Jobs confidence varies greatly depending on respondent employment status.
