The practice of parents letting kids take a sip of alcohol is 'not benign,' experts say.

Those children had more favorable expectations about drinking than kids who hadn’t tried booze. They were more likely to agree with statements such as “alcohol makes people want to have fun together” or “alcohol helps a person relax, feel happy, feel less tense, and can keep a person’s mind off of mistakes at school or work.”

The responses suggest an increasing interest in alcohol, said Joshua Gray, co-author of the paper and an assistant professor of medical and clinical psychology at Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, Maryland. “Bottom line, parents should not be giving their kids sips of alcohol,” Gray, who researches addiction and alcohol use, told TODAY.

“Those who’ve had a sip are more likely to report thinking that alcohol has positive effects, and that's important because we know that the thoughts about the effects of alcohol are related to starting up drinking and ultimately drinking more heavily.”The findings, published in the April issue of the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence, are based on responses from more than 4,800 children who were part of the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study of U.S. kids.

To sip or not to sip...under a parents’ supervision...both sides could argue pros and cons. Take away for me from this segment is having a conversation and being transparent.

My family let me taste wine for the first time on my 12th birthday! I had some sips too during high school and college. I’m now 41 and only drink during special occasions. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I can see the trends of this behavior in homes- however, it can’t just be a blanket statement. We were allowed sips of my dads beer and could try a drag of his cigarette- never had issues with either.I drink casually 4x a year and don’t smoke- curiosity out of our system.

I think it is very much the opposite

Or parents let the kids try it and the kids think it’s disgusting and not drink

I didn’t end up with toxic drinking. Stop.

Ya think?

My parents let my brother and I have occasional sips as kids and neither of us were drunk in High School/Collage and as adults we both would be considered social drinkers only. We were taught moderation. It wasn’t the sips but the messaging that accompanied it that influenced us.

Is this the same that routinely had Kathie Lee and Hoda drinking every morning? Now alcohol is bad ? A lot of Europeans would beg to differ....

Truth. Had a relative that let her kid drink wine when he was like ten years old. Where'd he end up? Burned up in a vacant trailer in Florida.

Good fucking grief! Apparently, France is filled with toxic drunks?!?

Parents should be charged legally for furnishing to a minor!

Interesting. I saw my father take a couple sips champagne twice at weddings. He never drank. He was Italian and they served wine w meals =Kids got wine in water. It made it not “naughty” and part of life so it wasn’t a big deal. So, I think this is a big generalization here... 🤷🏼‍♀️

I will be that parent

Bloody hell - look at Europe - toxic parents set children up for toxic drinking - sheesh!
