Native Americans have been hit hard by the pandemic, and tribes without federal recognition say they have little support to help their members. Lacking that political tie means they don't directly get a slice of federal coronavirus relief funding.

FILE - In this Jan. 6, 2020, file photo, Tony A. Johnson, center, elected chairman of the Chinook Indian Nation, plays a drum as he leads tribal members and supporters as they march to the federal courthouse in Tacoma, Wash., as they continue their efforts to regain federal recognition. As COVID-19 disproportionately affects Native American communities, many tribal leaders say the pandemic poses particular risks to tribes without federal recognition.

Unlike federally recognized tribes, the Chinook Nation doesn’t have a political relationship with the United States, which would make it eligible for federal coronavirus relief funding for state, local and tribal governments. Hundreds of tribes lack the designation, which they say leaves them struggling to help their members and less equipped to combat a pandemic that’s disproportionately affected Native Americans and other people of color.

Five tribes were recognized under the Obama administration and seven tribes under the Trump administration, the latest being the Little Shell Tribe of Chippewa Indians of Montana, according to the Interior Department.Tribes have received the designation through treaties, acts of Congress or by applying to the Interior Department.

Meanwhile, the Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians, a tribe in Los Angeles County without a land base, has raised $2.6 million to build a case. It’s among six tribes based in California, Florida, Michigan and New Mexico whose petitions are being considered by the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs.

“We do the best with what we have, but we wish we had more because we can’t fulfill everyone’s needs on our own,” he said.

When will they add the near-extermination of the Native population to our school teachings of Holocausts? We committed genocide way before the Nazis did and literally only minor peeps about it in more of our text books.

I had to enlarge the photo. For a moment, I thought they were white people.

Native American where? Al I see is $5 Indians

First we steal their land and now we are still trying to kill them off. They deserve better, this needs to be fixed!

What are the recognized tribes doing for them? Is there a concerted effort being made the more well off tribal communities to help them? This isn't an attack or indictment, just an honest question.

Don’t they still live in a state/county in America?

The US govt still denying First Nations based on racism... aka they don't fit the Disney pocahontas stereotype & /or won't agree to oppressor terms

deport all kids use American money spent on them help Native Americans. stop foreign aid use money sent countries 2 send America their kids 2 raise & spend it on Native Americans. they deserve this assistance more than kids forced on us & do nothing countries deport kids. no aid

Why aren't some tribes recognized? Because they have not conducted treaties with the government or the U.S. has decided they are not legitimate First Peoples. Not only was everything stolen, some of us face a double whammy of having to beg for help despite being 'illegitimate'.

Native Americans should be helped like any other American. This land was theirs before it was ours. We owe them help. I find it frustrating that we keep sending millions/billions of dollars overseas to help other countries... yet we aren’t helping the people here.

Taxes pay for this .. you pay tax you get a benefit

good luck

When the WH said all Americans that should mean ALL Americans.

“Tribes without recognition” is mostly just Elizabeth Warren types who want to own casinos
