This editorial is part of the Dallas Morning News editorial board’s slate of recommendations for the 2022 primary.Democratic voters face a good problem in the primary election for Tarrant County judge: two candidates with passion, a history of service and a positive outlook for the future of the county. We think Deborah Peoples is the better choice for the party.
Peoples, 69, is a retired AT&T vice president and former Tarrant County chair of the party. She called herself a “curious mix of corporate and community.” Her campaign slogan, “Tarrant Means Business,” focuses her on growing the economy and bringing jobs to help balance a tax burden that falls mostly on homeowners. Peoples doesn’t strike us as the kind of Democrat who is likely to ignore or hamstring the private sector.
Importantly for the party, Peoples is capable of delivering voters to the polls in both the primary and general elections. In an interview with KTVT-TV last year, she said her time as party chair was focused on “expanding the tent,” bringing more communities into the party. It was under her influence that Tarrant County voted for Beto O’Rourke in 2018 and Joe Biden in 2020. The county also added a Democrat to the Commissioners Court she would oversee as judge.
Peoples is positive and energetic with a can-do attitude which has contributed to her party success. She was the top vote-getter in Fort Worth’s mayoral election last year, but lost to Republican Mattie Parker in the runoff.
