Some animals live longer than they should for their size. Others, like a tiny sea creature called a hydra, don't seem to age at all. Can insights into animal aging help extend human lifespans?

Austad spoke with Invisibilia's Lulu Miller to discuss what science has uncovered about animal aging processes, and how researchers might be able to use what they've learned to extend human lifespans. There's no immortality on the horizon — or anything close to it — but it's likely science can eventually lengthen our lives by at least a little, Austad says. How did you go from lion taming for the movies to studying aging?newspaper in Portland.

And what did we learn about aging from the hydra? How is it even possible for them to have this kind of longevity? At least for as long as anybody's had the patience to follow individual hydras — that has been about seven years at the most — there's no indication that they age at all. It is possible that if we followed them long enough, we would discover that they aged, but no one has had the patience to do it. Certainly it would be a very, very long time.

Hail hydra?

Why do we need to live longer? We need to figure out how to be satisfied with what we have. Time as well as other things.

Great. That’s it: extend our lives even further so we have more options of chronic degenerative diseases to die from. Eight days of coronavirus flu—no matter how bad—is starting to sound better as an option.

Wow can you please give me the DNA sample for this hydra creature. Because I'm running out of time. And I'm getting older. Thank you for sharing. 🗽😷👍

I don’t understand why we need to expand human life span? The amount of time we have now is good enough.

I’m not really sure what the point of closing is. Everything is always an unknowable roll of the genetic evolutionary dice...

THINK FOR YOURSELF.

TIMELY SUBJECT MATTER IN A PANDEMIC BRO GOOD ONE

Possibly, but are we talking about genetic engineering, because if we start down that road, it'll open up a new can of worms we will later regret if we go too far.

We don't need to lengthen human lifespans. We have enough of a population problem, as it is.

Why? Unless the extended years are prime years. If we live longer what do we do about the birth rate? What if the rich only get to live longer, doesn't that further the divide? Not for me.

We could start by not electing conmen who shut down our pandemic response task force just to spite his predecessor. TrumpOwnsEveryDeath

why would we want to extend *gestures wildly* this?

Human live is long as it is
