South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg speaks during a Fox News Channel town hall. By Paul Waldman Paul Waldman Opinion writer covering politics Email Bio Follow Opinion writer May 21 at 12:42 PM The presidential campaign has begun, which means that Democrats are being asked again and again why they aren’t doing more to “reach out” to Republicans.
But consider this: When was the last time you heard some chin-scratching pundit say that President Trump will never be able to reach liberals if he doesn’t go on MSNBC? But what mainstream journalists and commentators almost never do is suggest that Republicans have a moral obligation to reach out to liberals, to assure them that the party understands them, cares about them and wants what’s best for them.
But if you’re going to take that perfectly reasonable position, you have to apply it to both parties. If Democrats have an obligation to “reach out” to Republicans not just because it might be advantageous in the election but because it’s the right thing to do, then surely Republicans have the same obligation.
Democrats respond to those demands all the time, and when they do, their performance is carefully critiqued. Did it show enough “respect” for conservatives and their values? Did it display sufficient familiarity with conservative cultural markers? Was it “authentic”?
No one wants to shake the their hands anymore They are all liars. You can’t make a deal with a liar
Maybe cause they don't know what pilloried means?
Why are you pretending to be a real newspaper when you lied and swallowed the collusion hoax for 2 years?
EXACTLY. Republicans cower to their base. Democrats ignore us and cower to the Republican base. It makes me SICK!!!!!
.... Because people who vote for Republicans aren't voting because of solutions or intelligent ideas, they're voting based on religion and racism. You can't reach out to people who are extreme.
because they are wrong on just about every issue of the day.
Bingo! Republicans act like they live in their own country. Nope.
Why aren’t the democrats?
because their Israeli supporters keep them in line
If you're president our free world can say goodbye! Go home and make sex with your wife!
Conservatives tend to like things the way they are. I.e. not wanting to change things. When someone wants change it should be incumbent upon them to make their case & present WHY change should happen. Progressives want to fundamentally change America. They need to explain why.
Because most republican candidates just went on CNN last cycle and it wasn't a big deal. Trump went on MSNBC.
Because we’ve been conditioned to accept abuse.
Probably because publications like your's, nytimes, and CNN have written a narrative since 2016 that has created an environment of angry left brown shirts hell bent on attacking President Trump and his supporters no matter what? So, maybe you're the reason?
Because he wasn't ( supposed) to win therefore the folks have what to do - because no one is in charge - except Moscow they are calling the shots.
They've gone so far to the right, they can no longer see, let alone reach the center. Dems have shown they can win the popular vote in the age of Trump. They need to win the vote in the counties and states that will flip the electoral math. It's coming.
Evil Democrats have always had an obligation to pretend they are good, not vice-versa.
You mean *cave 😂
For three years you've been lying to and about Trump supporters Your complete disrespect has been noticed. How do you suppose that will work out for you?
Because Dems would throw a hissy fit.
