Opinion: We’re about to find out how much pride is left in Congress

A first printing of the Declaration of Independence is displayed at an auction house in Boston in May 2000. By Danielle Allen Danielle Allen Contributing columnist Bio Follow March 20 at 4:43 PM Last week, the Senate followed the House and voted 59 to 41 to terminate President Trump’s declaration of a national emergency along the U.S.-Mexico border. That was a good day for our democracy. But exactly how much legislative pride is left in Congress? This is the question we get to answer next.

Still, though, this is a moment to find out what is truly in our representatives’ hearts. Does the spirit of the American Revolution beat there still or is it gone? Given a second chance, just how many of those 182 House members will keep their names on the record as supporting the remarkable diminishing of congressional power brought about by the president’s declaration?

Take a look at the list of grievances the colonists drew up to charge King George III with tyranny. There are 18 charges . On this list, the power and importance of legislatures have pride of place. The first seven grievances concern the king’s interference with lawmaking. For that matter, the first charge is simply that the king “has refused his assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.

So what was at the very top of the list of concerns when the colonists voted to break away from England? The erosion of the power of their legislatures. The freedom of the people and our status as free and equal citizens depend on our representation in a healthy legislature that forms the first branch of government.

Pride isn’t the concern because many of our elected representatives are FILLED with pride in themselves and their party. How about we do a check on INTEGRITY?

Awesome

That's all uou have in Congress, fakse pride. The 'Hooray for me' is alive an well in Congress. Pride in accomplishments for honext service to America is lacking.

Spoiler alert - not much.

You meant today how much she it is left..pride been gone. Better ask somebody

If they do then all othe national emergency acts by presidents need to be done away with as well. He has the power to do so.

Congress replaced pride with greed long ago.

Not a great header. It’s not about how proud Congress is. It is whether the members respect the Constitution and its basic principles as the piece points out. Democracies die from the rot within. We seem headed in that direction.

Not much on the GOP side if you keep up the cowardly acts by going against “their oath to the Constitution” and blindly excusing Individuals-1

Not much I am convinced the Founding Fathers did not think the PRESIDENT Should be Above the LAW ! Back in their day they would have ridden out on a Rail .

Answer : Zero

'Healthy Legislature' is impossible today. What 'was' 200 yrs. ago, is not here/now, hasn't been for decades. MPOV, take a test, prove you understand what voting means, why you vote. Stop busing/persuading clueless ppl to vote. i.e. homeless/nursing home elders/illegals, etc

I like this part: But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security

I think we already know the answer.

Prediction: not that much.

Vetos are wholly constitutional, removing or limiting the 2nd amendment, limiting the 1st amendment, removal of the electoral college, and forced taxation however are all unconstitutional.

That cow has left the barn. Zero. Zilch. Nothing. Nada. Nil.

tell me again how many constitutionally given vetoes president trump has used during his presidency thus far? oh, ZERO! There is nothing against the declaration of independence you hacks.

When will congress do their job and remove all illegals from our country. . $ 116bil per year it costs America. . what are they afraid of ?

Opinion | How the Supreme Court weakened Congress on emergency declarationsTo understand how a 1983 Supreme Court decision dramatically affected the way the government works, consider what Congress had intended when it passed the National Emergencies Act. seems like a problem that should have been fixed 30 years ago, not when someone they don't like is using power they have Resolutions are meaningless jibberish until they are signed by the President, which will not happen. The basis of your whole story is false. What hasn't the Supreme Court weakened in the last 30 years? They've destroyed any chance at removing money from politics. Gerrymandering. Guns. Voting rights.
