Opinion: Gen. Philip Breedlove says many Americans may not realize that U.S. interests are also at stake as fighting rages between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Here's his argument for active U.S. diplomacy to de-escalate the conflict.

Philip Breedlove is a retired four-star general of the U.S.

What many Americans may not realize is that, in addition to the heavy toll in the region, U.S. interests are also at stake — including energy resources and the stability of the South Caucasus. The United States must put greater diplomacy to work to prevent a disaster. The South Caucasus hosts critical energy and transportation infrastructure. Gas and oil pipelines carrying Caspian energy to Europe via Georgia and Turkey are key to reducing European dependence on Russian energy.

And finally, Iran, which shares borders with both Armenia and Azerbaijan, and is home to many millions of ethnic Azerbaijanis that live in its northern provinces, could easily get pulled into the fray as well. The possibility of three major regional powers incrementally drifting into the conflict seems more likely than we should accept. The potential risks of a wider regional conflict are simply too high.

Preventing further escalation should be a top priority for U.S. policy in the South Caucasus. We applaud Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's effort this week to bring the foreign ministers of the warring parties in for consultation in Washington. It is a start — but more needs to be done.

Are you advocating for another endless war?

human rights, war crimes, genocide, all reasons why the US should at least try to stop Azerbaijan and Turkey’s aggression (partly funded by US taxpayers) on the indigenous people of Nagorno Karabagh. or should we just stop pretending and admit that it’s all about the oil?

Yes let’s send the kids that survive COVID to war. Great idea. Is this NPR being hawkish? Crap the world is upside down.

They keep saying things like these to make cases of US involvement in endless wars. Diplomacy on the surface, and boots on the ground subsequently. The slope is as slippery as it is designed.

With Trump as President world affairs are limited to the golf course.

a major ommission, among many others, is the fact that Armenia is a democracy while Azerbaijan is ruled by a corrupt dictator and that US military aid to that dictatorship was $100 million in 2019.

The missile and arms use of where it is coming from..it's a TrumpVirus war here Stateside and Trump mainly is a isolation POTUS,sad but if monies aren't involved he isn't going to direct in Peace War,it is what it is under this Administration

“Active US diplomacy” is a fun euphemism for let’s go murder some poor people

Yes it's the War in the USA nobody is paying attention too just BBC and great job they are doing covering the system drone sophisticated air strikes etc,Europe and Asia might have to come in on this conflict/NATO..if anything I'm sure the USA is on monitor of...

Unfortunately this administration knows nothing about diplomacy. We’ll have to wait until we have an administration that will put diplomats back into positions that have been empty for a while.

USA can’t even take care of its own people or unite itself, how is it supposed to solve anyone else’s problems.

TheWarMonitor I don’t expect the Trump regime to concentrate on anything more than saving the Trump regime. The only diplomatic moves that Trump has been made - were made to benefit Trump.

Yeah, well good luck to you. Many Americans Do Not realize that US interest are at stake as the Covid pandemic rages on unchecked in the US.

Trump is the man to bring peace. He solved the middle East problems. Every time he speaks peace breaks out. I'm sure he's the person to bring peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Not 😂😂😂

Gee, General, we're all just trying to stay alive, keep a roof over our heads and food in our bellys. Pardon US if we're not on this. Oops! More concerned about the idiot in the White house and the future of our country right now. 🤨

Shame on you for putting this out. These people don’t care about the conflict, just the natural resources

Sadly, Trump seems to be systematically dismantling the diplomatic corps. He has not replaced ambassadors who have resigned. So the American people need to let Trump know that if he wins, he needs to build up the embassies overseas in crucial places. But he won't. Vote him out
