Thanks to the information revolution, a stunning 90% of the data created by humanity has been generated in just the past two years.
It has been 50 years since the U.S. reached the moon, almost 30 years since the Berlin Wall fell. Technology has advanced to the point that tiny powerful computers are routinely carried around in pockets and purses. Times have changed, and so has the math people use in everyday life. What we propose is as obvious as it is radical: to put data and its analysis at the center of high school mathematics. Every high school student should graduate with an understanding of data, spreadsheets, and the difference between correlation and causality.
opinion Statistics at daughter's school (she's a senior) requires Algebra 2 as pre requisite. Algebra 2 is necessary to go beyond basic analysis. Does everyone need Calculus? No. However door shouldn't be shut. My daughter was able to take Calc BC, Stats and Physics C. I'm glad she was.
opinion Álgebra is necessary to do data science.
opinion Actually Math Is About Critical Thinking Most Of Us Use The Problem Solving Skills We Learned In Math Everyday But Not To Solve Math Problems! BlackLivesMatter Indivisible
opinion
opinion Indeed, should have begun the transformation decades ago. Thus, we ended up with a whole mess of climate scientists bent on destroying [literally getting rid of it] and/or adjusting it to fit their needs.
opinion Elementary school English should be about writing essays and discussions of the classics. Who needs to learn the alphabet or reading.
opinion you can’t run before you learn how to walk
opinion How about classes on managing personal finances, financial literacy is equally important in today’s world.
opinion How do you fit a curve to data? By taking derivatives. What is a moving average? A convolution i.e. integration. Anything other than the most trivial data analysis requires a solid foundation in mathematics. Polynomial long division can stuff it though
opinion Too much time wasted on emotions, feelings & political agenda. No time for significant cognitive development in STEM, calculus & data science. LA unified & almost all CA school districts are failing miserably. Ya think equality of outcomes with the “undocumented” causes dilution?
opinion Also start algebra alongside a Logic class! Logic shouldn't be relegated to college 'math for liberal arts students', should be the foundation of all learning, especially with how perfectly it sets the stage for essay writing and learning to code in ANY language, including Excel.
opinion Highschool math (and any other subject, for the matter) should be about training the alumni on how to LEARN and THINK. Therefore, they can choose their areas of interest.
opinion
opinion There’s little point in teaching abstract mathematical concepts without their practical applications.
