Soybeans are harvested in Tiskilwa, Ill., in September 2018. By Henry Olsen Henry Olsen Columnist focusing on politics, populism, and American conservative thought Email Bio Follow Columnist May 24 at 3:50 PM President Trump announced Thursday that he would extend $16 billion in aid to farmers harmed by his trade conflict with China. The politics of that move are clear, but it sends yet another message that farmers count while the rest of us don’t.
It’s not going to take long for others hurt by Chinese tariffs and retaliatory measures to ask for their fair share. Many manufacturers depend on Chinese steel imports to make their products. They don’t have government subsidized insurance to protect them when their sales drop. They will rightly ask why they should have to bear the cost of a trade war while soybean farmers don’t.
Consumers could also get in line for aid. The Trade Partnership estimates the average household will pay an extra $767 next year because of the new tariffs on Chinese imports. That amount is equal to or greater than the size of the tax cut they received from Trump’s signature tax bill.
That’s just not tenable. We are already on track to borrow more than $1 trillion just to cover normal government spending. Budget negotiations underway are likely to result in more spending hikes, which mean more borrowing. Congress and Trump will be caught between legitimate political demands for fair treatment and budgetary realities. Something will have to give.
That's hilarious from a Democrat Party that always wants to make a group matter more than the rest of us. They were happy to bailout Unions.
lol.. they are socialist now
Well, in a sense they should. See, Farmers supply themselves and the rest of us with food. The solution to the problem is for at least two thirds of America to explore the House and the Senate to impeach Trump and force Pence to resign.
AGREE!!! THANKS!!!
I have only two words here: Auto Bailouts. Trump has repeatedly criticized the auto bailouts... which by the way worked and saved our auto industry. But Trump is actually the one who has made this a crisis with his tariff war. Now he becomes a false hero giving them subsidies.
So true! Soylent Green anyone? More then enough to go around!😕
Yes, they should. Without farmers, our population would starve to death. They are much more valuable than....reporters or pundits
They do when he is destroying the economy
We can all live without Apple, google or Amazon, but we can’t live without the farmers.
This is what happens when city-dwellers think the food in their grocery stores magically comes from thin air.
FakeNews LIES doesn't matter
Well what would we do without them they grow our food so?
You’re just upset because now you cannot use disgruntled farmers to disparage our president. Running out of talking points WaPo.
Yes let's let the farmers go under and stop producing food. Then we will be dependant on other countries to sell us food. Nothing could go wrong with that one.
Yeah, but they voted for Trump, so...
No farmers, no food!
I would agree we should all be given money equally but I like to eat so 🤔
Farmers feed the world. just spread lies and bullshit!
Lol they matter more than a twatty writer
Shall we talk about westward expansion as a tale of what happens when you coddle the multiple failures of white farmers? Clean out the indigenous to free up land so that people who couldn’t make farms work in the east could try and fail again...and again...and again.
There’s never been a more grasping, coddled, moochy, entitled, or whiny demographic than the American farmer.
There wouldn't be the rest of us without farmers.
Thread
Yes they should
Jeff Bezos can't find a way to put his slimy new world order hands in it.
I love how the Washington post frame is everything to be insane propaganda! Do you all have any idea how much trying to sell us to ask versus how much they buy from us. You are cherry picking the tiniest issue to vindicate you’re stupid narrative!
LogicalDame You all are complaining about the crumbs, and missing the entire cake! I know you all would prefer that we just submissively bend over and let the Chinese Communist Party do whatever they want Not because it is the right thing to do, but because it would vindicate your narrative
Right, because those Urban Gardens are working so well in Detroit, and everywhere else --give me a break! Fast Facts About Agriculture - The Voice of Agriculture - American Farm Bureau Federation
You're kidding me, right? With all of the new equipment, the government mandated upgrades and changes, plus global warming and weather pattern changes.... You don't think they're underappreciated? Wow.
happysquirel75 Um...the rest of us are fed by Farmers?
Not more important but certainly EQUALLY important. Another opinion by an unworthy outlet. Try again.
To the Wahington Post, no farmers, no food. Can your paper grow food?
Beans are everywhere, no shortage. But Trump supports a gold mine that can harm a major salmon fishery. Let’s eat gold!
The trade war with China will affect all Americans. What is the net gain to the US taxpayers of the tariff war with our international trading partners? The taxpyers funding farmer subsidies will have reduced buying power due to tariffs on imported goods. Epic fail.
'Should/n't' is a VERY loaded word. There is a strong sentiment brewing against those of us in the middle of the country and I don't think it will end well for others. Saying we should have our voting powers restricted and ending our bailouts will result in a bad ending.
That’s what Teump told you to say huh?! Thanks Trump Post
True
Wapo being divisive as always
The US borrows money from China to pay farmers...to not sell their soybeans to China. The Art of the Deal? MAGA
Opinion; Being directly affected by the US China trade war, Farmers obviously deserved to get first priority of compensation. They are the front line soldier in the real life. For the rest should not be overlooked too Thanks
Before Trump announced aid for farmers Richest man's hobby: 'Trump is hurting our farmers!' After trump announced aid for farmers Richest man's hobby: 'Farmers aren't more important than us.' If I didn't know better I'd say you're just saying the opposite of what Trump is doing.
MAKE THAT SAME STATEMENT AGAIN WHEN YOU ARE STARVING IN LINE PREYING THAT YOU CAN EVEN GET FOOD FOR YOURSELF AND OR YOUR FAMILY!!)
Really? They shouldnt matter less but they do. Dems repeated treat them like crap and creat/support abusive policies
Dummies that's were food comes from!! So yes they are kinda important
A fraction of the population in 'red' states is controlling the rest of us.
Replace illegals with farmers
Farmers voted for this and now they want government handouts? These losers..? new age welfare queens.. deplorable degenerates.. Welcome to the right wing's version of socialism.
Fact: farmers vote, donate heavily in politics, and are of strategic use for a country. They objectively matter more in politics.
America should care more about Veterans with no healthcare and them living on the streets. Not the eyesight of octopuses being harmed by oxygen depletion in the ocean, but that is what is happening.
I mean obviously. Eating is soooo overrated. 👍
It matters for the 🍊🤡 because those only represent votes. He doesn't care if they sell or not their soybeans to China.
Fuck food tbh
They should, but how about we not start stupid trade wars that crater their livelihoods?
We can live a lot longer without opinion columnists than we can without farmers.
But they vote red...
