Colin Powell was a paradox: He was a key enabler of perhaps the most tragic example of U.S. foreign policy overreach in recent memory. Yet for most of his career, he struggled mightily — and frequently in vain — against precisely that kind of overreach.in last week’s obituaries.
Powell, who passed away this week, will be forever associated with two things. The first and likely more historically significant is his ill-fatedin front of the U.N. Security Council, which paved the way for the invasion and occupation of Iraq, and directed the course of U.S. foreign policy for two decades.
Colin Powell holds up a vial he said could contain anthrax as he presents evidence of Iraq's alleged weapons programs to the United Nations Security Council. | Elise Amendola/AP Photo The mismatch between these two legacies is the ultimate irony of Colin Powell’s career. His compelling vision of constrained U.S. military power, forged during the Vietnam War, was out of step with a post-Cold War zeitgeist that saw America as the “.” Powell failed to sell the foreign policy establishment on the idea that the military should be used sparingly and prudently. Worse still, after a decade of resisting the missionary impulse in U.S.
Top notch revisionism here 🏆
ColinPowell was ' FullyVaccinated '. Tell me again how vAcCiNeSwOrK COVIDiots .🤡 Yah he had other health problems. So did many other 'unvaccinated ' people that supposedly died from Covid.
BS
We all make mistakes. Some admit to them and try to make amends, many never do and even double down on them. Colin Powell was one of the good guys. I would even have voted for him for President.
'knew what he was doing was wrong' is a pretty wide margin away from 'he's the real victim here'. i reckon, and this is just my opinion mind, but i reckon the 'real victims' are the real victims. you know, the ones who are dead now. because of that guy there.
Is this the same guy who covered up the My Lai Massacre & then later helped Saddam gas his own people? That's a 'prudent vision'
lets hope his legacy is no more colonial wars based on lying criminal officials..
I’d like to know what defines harming “America’s interests” as the pretext to going to war in the future? The complexity of relations with China & the myriad of issues relating to that appear to all being dealt with in one foul swoop by the same blunt instrument of weapons & war.
Colin Powell's adoption of the lies of weapons of mass destruction makes him responsible for the deaths of more than a million people, including women and children, for the destruction of an entire country, the spread of terrorism, and the expansion of Iran's influence.
I love how the article paints his “vision” as the words he used to obscure the many war crimes he committed. The mans doctrine was violent imperialism, to the very core.
VP Cheney admitted to GOP Fed Chair Greenspan that he and Netanyahu LIED about Weapons of Mass Destruction. They ordered CIA/Mossad to spread the lie. Gen Powell didn't think an American would lie to start a war. UK Parliament: 1,200,000 Iraqis killed, including 100,000's of kids
He was remarkable but at the end of his career he became a politician, life long republican that had a lot to do with the Iraq war which we chose to forget
