OPINION: Amazon needs to raise its standards and pay its workers a living wage, Margot Bloomstein writes.

We need to talk. We have a problem. Over the past quarter-century, you’ve become part of the American family. For me and millions of others, you made online shopping easy, efficient, and secure. Amid so much change, you’ve brought the world to people who are remote, homebound, or otherwise constrained by the pandemic. You’re dependable—and even as news breaks about employee abuse, safety issues, and union busting, we trust you.

I’m not alone when I hold my nose and engage with Amazon begrudgingly. You’re not the retailer of choice, but the retailer of convenience. No one wants to choose between their values and actions—and as many businesses embrace the responsibility of building a stronger democracy, we don’t have to. The pandemic has prompted many organizations to engage with employees and customers in more humane ways that foster community, increase retention, and build trust.

How do you build trust through vulnerability? Acknowledge your problems. When employees draw visibility to their working conditions, don’t deny the issues, but dig in to learn more. Respect the interest of employees and a concerned public by sharing what you’re doing to address the situation. Stay away from platitudes and bravado; you’re better than that and all too often have the data to prove it. Offer accountability and transparency.

Regaining trust Will these changes fix everything? No, of course not. The publishing industry will still be prey to your algorithm and small bookstores will still have to scramble to justify their prices and inventory to maintain a community that your convenience handily undercuts. But just because you can’t fix everything doesn’t mean you should ignore the problems you can address. You’ve screwed up, Amazon, but there are some things you can fix immediately.

'We love you, but you've got a problem.' Imagine being so weak that you're unable to stop giving half your salary to a company that treats their workers so bad you WRITE AN ARTICLE ABOUT IT

good luck

Their minimum wage is $15...?

I don't give two fucks how much the employees make as long as my oodles of noodles show up in 48 hrs...

It’s like picking through weeds trying to find a legit seller/product. Amazon is starting to get a shady vibe to it. Disappointing. Too big for their own good

Margot Bloomstein what ? 20 bucks an hour for moving boxes around in a warehouse is not a good wage? Go get a job at Walmart and see what that pays. Do your research before you write this crap fakenews

Consumers need to stop being so greedy and trying to find goods for so cheap. Do employees a favor and only shop for the most expensive items and retailers will raise prices so they can pay a living wage.

95% only bad news(

If you believe in this statement then stop using Amazon. They are making so much money they will continue to hire everyone at 15 bucks a hour. Amazon needs to be split up

Opinion | Lindsey Graham showed why America's racism problem is so direOpinion | DeanObeidallah: How can Congress tackle systemic racism in our criminal justice system when the GOP won’t admit it even exists? DeanObeidallah If systemic racism exists it’s a Democrat problem. Who runs schools and government bureaucracy? Typically Democrats, that’s a fact. So basically the DNC needs to find out why most their white voters are racist. 😆 DeanObeidallah Because the only place systemic racism exists, is in the news rooms of MSNBC and CNN. They have nothing else to try and stir shit up with. MSNBC and CNN are the enemy of the American people!! DeanObeidallah They can't even admit democracy was attacked. Their Overlord wants to destroy the justice system not improve it. On racism in general, they won't admit it exists. If it doesn't exist they can't be guilty of it. Cynical cover for them and their base. Nothing to see here.
