Olympic champ Biles withdraws from all-around competition

The American gymnastics superstar withdrew from Thursday’s all-around competition to focus on her mental well-being. USA Gymnastics said in a statement on Wednesday that the 24-year-old is opting to not compete. The decision comes a day after Biles removed herself from the team final following one rotation because she felt she wasn’t mentally ready.

Jade Carey, who finished ninth in qualifying, will take Biles’ place in the all-around. Carey initially did not qualify because she was the third-ranking American behind Biles and Sunisa Lee. International Gymnastics Federation rules limit countries to two athletes per event in the finals. The organization said Biles will be evaluated before deciding if she will participate in next week’s individual events.

Maybe NBC should not have the camera in her face looking for her to breakdown after each and every vault and routine. They put too much pressure on her.

Bad timing. It would have been best if she did not take a position on the team. At least her team could have made adjudged the competition. The last minute pull out gave the team zero options

I don’t want to even think about how dangerous gymnastics is, how deadly it could be, if a gymnast’s head isn’t where it’s needed to be. I’m proud of her for doing what’s best for her and admitting to the world it’s ok to need help.

Does this mean if your best in your field of sport, you are not mentally prepared. Of course im just generalizing. Could we consider this as one of the qualification so that the vacancy can be given to a mentally ready participant?

I respect her decision. I just wished all this 'understanding' extended to everyone else who bowed out for mental health reasons because from my perspective if you a guy you must perform.

Unless they're hiding what's really going on, she cracked under the pressure and didn't want to lose. She's quoted saying it was the pressure. Why you all are applauding her like she suffers from an actual mental health problem is insulting to people actually going through it.

Before anyone dares to trash her, I'm just going to say that mental health is paramount and just as important as physical health. Health comes before anything else in this life. Without health we can't neither be effective at our careers nor our personal lives. I forever love her
