Andrew J. Tobias, cleveland.com COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Secretary of State Frank LaRose is quarantining after testing positive for COVID-19 on Monday, days after he met with Gov. Mike DeWine and other members of the Ohio Redistricting Commission during an hours-long meeting to negotiate and approve new state legislative maps. LaRose began feeling “very minor” symptoms on Sunday and, after a positive rapid test on Monday, began notifying people with whom he was in close contact in recent days, a spokesman said. The day before he started feeling symptoms, LaRose attended a meeting of the Ohio Redistricting Commission, a panel composed of LaRose, DeWine, and other top state elected officials that approved a new state legislative map plan Saturday night. LaRose was not wearing a mask during much of the meeting, nor was DeWine. DeWine, who is 75 and has asthma, is part of a higher-risk category for complications from COVID-19, a respiratory disease. But LaRose and DeWine sat on opposite sides of a large committee room in the Ohio Statehouse at a distance of roughly 25 feet apart where the commission met. The governor is not quarantining himself since he was not in close contact with LaRose on Saturday, according to Dan Tierney, a governor’s office spokesman. Also on the redistricting commission is state Auditor Keith Faber, House Speaker Bob Cupp, Senate President Matt Huffman, House Minority Leader-Elect Allison Russo and state Sen. Vernon Sykes. The commission met for several hours on Saturday afternoon before commission members recessed to meet privately before eventually approving state legislative maps around 8 p.m. LaRose set near Russo during the meeting as well as several staffers for the Senate Democratic caucus. “Fortunately, I feel fine,” LaRose said in a statement to cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer. “I even went on a 6.5 mile run on Sunday evening, but after continuing to experience some very mild symptoms, I figured it was best to take a test and be sure.” LaRose is vaccinated and boosted, a spokesman said, and has postponed his public events for the week. LaRose is a Republican who is running for re-election this year. Note to readers: if you purchase something through one of our affiliate links we may earn a commission. Disclaimer
