Oh, the books that sold last week by Dr. Seuss. After news that his estate was pulling six books over stereotyping, his sales more than quadrupled last week to more than 1.2 million copies. Yet the books that are being withdrawn weren't the big sellers.

FILE - American author, artist and publisher Theodor Seuss Geisel, known as Dr. Seuss, appears at an event in Dallas on April 3, 1987. More than 1.2 million copies of stories by the children’s author sold in the first week of March 2021, following the news that his estate was pulling six books because of racial and ethnic stereotyping. For days virtually every book in the top 20 on Amazon’s bestseller list was by Dr. Seuss.

According to NPD BookScan, which tracks around 85% of retail sales, the top sellers weren’t even the books being withdrawn. “The Cat in the Hat” sold more than 100,000 copies, compared to just 17,000 in the previous week. “Green Eggs and Ham” topped 90,000 copies, and “One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish” sold around 88,000.

Dr. Seuss was born on March 2, 1904, and sales traditionally go up during his birthday week. But this year they likely received an extra shot because of those most opposed to the estate’s decision. Conservatives soon responded with allegations of “cancel culture,” as Fox News provided extensive coverage and such prominent Republicans as House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy released videos of themselves reading from Seuss books.

Shows what happens when you try to cancel the wrong culture. If these cancel people say something is bad then I will probably support what they are trying to cancel. Even if I don’t agree with what they are canceling. They’re called rights. Freedom of speech is one.

Typical trust fund antics. Stupid Woke Folk!

Well what if it were a publicity stunt? Why stop there?

But I thought he got 'cancelled'? Lol

Disgusting to see the Right rewarding the Seuss estate for their censorious behavior.

My feeling all along was that this was like a publicity stunt by his publisher: create controversy, threaten to remove books from circulation, create panic buying and laugh all the way to the bank?

Six books out of dozens, and them with very minor 'issues,' and suddenly the comments on twitter are all about how evil Seuss was and how anyone who supports any of his books is a racist. Humanity is a lost cause if they're our only representatives.

The copies that were withdrawn aren’t big sellers, because you can’t buy them anywhere.

Was it the 33%?

Marketing at it's best!😂

I still remember when they beat up their own coffee machines. They beat up their own machines they had already purchased to burn Keurig 😂😭

These marketing schemes are getting better and better.

But people realize that cancellation is progressive and he’ll eventually be totally gone.

MDomino07 Sad that he’s not around to write an insurrection edition of “Oh, the Places You’ll Go.”

Dr Seuss books are all about love & inclusion. The Star Belly Sneetches highlights the right & their fear of others. The Butter Battle Book? All the nations race for the biggest weapon & then no one wants to be the one to end the world. DrSeussIsWoke FBR

Leftists think only conservative's are buying these books.

Bravo to the DrSeuss Geisel family. The greatest marketing trick in the literary world: pull old racist books from circulation and create a false panic; dramatically increase sales of rest of catalogue to 'cAnCeL CuLtRrE' crazies AND keep cred with liberals. Well played.

I hope the folks the bought these books, read the ones about kindness and acceptance.

Proof that pulling stupid books with kinda racist stuff works

LMAO WHAT

Interesting

Kinda like when the NRA stokes fear about guns....?

Is almost as if the people losing it over this nontroversy are idiots who don't even understand what happened with those books.

If there’s something perceived as racist, you know Republicans are going to jump all over it to support it. There’s no racism in Dr. Seuss’s books. Assholes 🤬

Opinion | Dr. Seuss Teaches the Limits of Cancel CultureFrom WSJopinion: “The urge to ‘cancel’ is born of the desire to root out racism and insensitivity, unquestionably a noble intention. The issue is that it is far easier to tear down than it is to create” opinion It is more virtuous to tolerate an insensitive person than to cancel them. opinion I can't believe we're still talking about this opinion Everybody's trying to get their twitter cred with this issue.
