The government of Tonga has released its first official update since aThe Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha'apai volcano exploded on Saturday night, sending a plume of ash more than 60,000 feet into the stratosphere and triggering tsunami waves that reached the West Coast of the United States.

Since then, officials said, limited communications have been made with Vava'u and Ha'apai through satellite phones and radios. No communications have been made with Niuas, although it was considered an area of low risk due to the distance from the volcano.
