The Oakland Educations Association has given the district 48 hours from Wednesday to come to an agreement about an updated COVID safety plan.

OAKLAND — The president of Oakland Unified School District’s teachers union has given the district 48 hours to come to an agreement about an updated COVID safety plan for schools across the district, saying that without an agreement the union will vote on whether to strike.

In response to an 18-page proposal from the OEA, Ranahan said, the district sent a one-page counter-proposal, and refused to bargain on HEPA filters in cafeterias, outdoor dining safety, staffing and power outage procedures. MetWest sophomores Ayleen Serrano, Ximena Santana and Benjamin Rendon created a petition, which has been signed by more than 1,200 students as of Thursday, after an uptick in positive cases at their school after coming back from winter break on Jan. 3.

Sasaki said that the absence rate across all grades and schools was 24.6 percent on Tuesday — compared to 20.9 percent the first week of January and 28.1 percent the second week. At least 230 teachers called out sick on Tuesday, compared to an average of 250 daily teacher absences on days without a teacher sickout.
