A veteran New York Police Department officer will become the first woman to be appointed chief of patrol, one of the highest-ranking posts in the department, NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said Thursday.

Juanita Holmes, who was already the highest-ranking Black woman in the NYPD, will start the new assignment on Friday. Her promotion was among a series of changes in the top ranks of the nation’s largest police force announced by Mr. Shea at a press conference.
