Police in New York City say there were 54 fireworks complaints in the first half of 2019. In the same period this year, there have been over 11,000. Now, Mayor Bill de Blasio has formed a task force aimed at halting the illegal sale of fireworks.

It's illegal to set off your own fireworks in New York, and Mayor Bill de Blasio has said the city is going to crack down on suppliers."We're going to start a huge sting operation to go and get these illegal fireworks at the base," he said. Last week he appointed a task force made up of officers from the New York City Police Department, fire marshals and members of the Sheriff's Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

Smith said he wants to quash another rumor, too. He said these fireworks are not professional-grade. Those are bar code tracked. Their fuses burn more quickly, and so you need a special tube, or mortar, to launch them safely — one that will send them far away quickly.Anderson said that in his Brooklyn neighborhood, the nightly explosions seem to follow a schedule.

One Brooklyn resident said, via email, that he's moving – after 11 years – because the fireworks aggravate his epilepsy. Others wrote about how difficult it is to tolerate loud bangs when living with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Lol

DeBlazio stands to be the worst Mayor this great city has ever known. He's anything but the city's caretaker. He's been the biggest failure this city has known in its entire history.

could npr possibly fabricate a more fantastic tale about what is going on with fireworks in nyc? they are being used as weapons, by gangs of thugs.

That’s what I call a resume builder. Chairman of the Firecracker Taskforce

You (guys) are funny, and thank you :D Mr. Garner's and Mr. Floyd's deaths at the hand of police had nothing to do with race. In Mr. Garner's death, the supervisor on the scene was a black woman. In Mr. Floyd's, there was 1 white, 1 black, 1 Asian, and 1 Hispanic officer.

Defund the police by starving them out of business... ie don't commit crime. M kay?

Can't wait to see how many people get their skulls broken for this. How about focusing on crimes with real victims.

Lol. Task force. The police aren’t approaching people with fireworks because of the risk they face with a confrontation and because once arrested they will be back out due to no cash bail.

You mean the fireworks that are being used by police to aggravate people, in an attempt to blame it on the BlackLivesMatter movement to erode support? Yeah this is textbook psychological warfare. The horrifying part is that it is being employed against innocent people.

Just convince MyrtleBeach to not allow NYers this summer and you should be good.

It seems like the lack of police response to violent protests and rioting have emboldened those who want to break the law. The mayor should have made more of an effort to crack down on brazen lawbreaking during the protests. This falls on him.

New York is a place to put the scum of America. PERIOD

My guess is it’s the police.

I'd imagine with the corona impact on business, firework sellers are sitting on massive inventories and selling them of very cheap

How many complaints of police brutality?
