Movies have a long history of using scars and other facial differences as shorthand for someone being evil. But advocates are pushing back on the harmful trope. 'It makes people justify abusing us, harassing us, not hiring us,' one advocate says.

This - ' Pearson and Spooner would like to see roles where the main characters have facial differences, but that isn't their defining characteristic.'

Al Pacino stars in”Aesthetically Compromised Face”. Say hello to my lack of physical mass friend.

Let's see the evidence. Who exactly did not hire you because of scarred movie villains? If none then shut it.

You have got to be fucking kidding me

I'm covered in scars and am an awful person I don't see any problem with this trope.

Never end of what people will complain about. There are a group of Americans that are just pathetic and miserable people. This is what everyone feared if you give into woke culture. Stop being misled by these people.

Normalize rich people as short hand for evil

These advocates need to find a better cause

Oh Jesus Christ…it’s a movie. If people cannot differentiate, then we’ve got bigger issues at hand here.

007, A Racist , Sexist, Elitist, British Imperialist Pig .... 👽 ....

This is just stupid

Yes, thank you. And animated productions also feature villains with Jewish features as well. Astounding ignorance.

You don’t say….

Honestly, get over yourselves. Scars are awesome. I have one across my forehead - it’s a great ice breaker.

If you have a scar on your face, you’re evil. Sorry, those are the rules.

Something we should all get behind tbh

Actors will real life scars: Both Joaquin Phoenix and Tom Burke have cleft pallets. And Tom is totally hero material.

Please… please stop NPR.

I've got a facial scar. My eyes also make me look like I'm high out of my mind. If people see me as a freak, that's not the fault of movies- it's because they're weak, ignorant, and cowardly asshats.

Please. Please stop this nonsense. How sensitive can we get? We have so many real world issues

*other differences ... Who remembers Penguin?

OMG. What micro aggressions will they come up with next? NPR is becoming the ONION.

pop corn and a coke cost more than the tickets I hop all the theaters go broke. Learn 400 percent markup is enough not 2000

Now do queer-coding and gender nonconformity in villains, esp. male ones. The lisp, the voice, the effete mannerisms: must be a bad guy. Compare hero and villain in 99.999% of fiction even from this year and the latter will be less gender-conforming / cisheteronormative.

Hmm it's almost like the entire James Bond concept is completely tired and outdated at this point.

Did a great job as Freddy Mercury he did everything right he deserved everything. He is over rated unable to act a simple detective for the director. Over rated. the other actors showed just how lost he is in building a simple character.

It's a movie It's visual

Tell me you don’t have any real problems without saying you don’t have any real problems.

Don’t get the cat people started..

Such lazy commentary, NPR. Indigo Montoya, Cable, Deadpool, Harry Freakin' Potter? Plenty o' good guys with scars. Quit stirin' up garbage for the twitter woke brigade.

STFU. You people ruin everything. People are sick of you people. Hint hint…..

The scar lobby is here

I am thoroughly attracted to eyebrow scars. Nothing better. Very primordial. They survived the battle, they are the fittest. Going with them.

Completely agree.

It makes sense to stop on many levels. In addition to increasing discrimination against those w facial differences, it serves to make people more likely to trust people who look 'good' in social normative way. We need to learn to trust or distrust on substance over appearances.

Ten years from now: 'From Black Cat to Black Hair: How A Movie Trope Perpetuates Harmful Stereotypes About Black-Haired Individuals.' 'Advocates say they'd like to see the movie business put an end to villains having black hair.'

Give it a rest fer Christ sake. People are not harassing, abusing, or deny jobs because some movie villains have scars. They’d do that anyways because that’s the type of person they are.

Harry Potter ruins your entire narrative. Please stop this garbage

Contrived

Scars are cool, disregard what NPR tweets.

Tina Fey begs to differ.

In a way though, these characters pushed past the trauma and achieved greatness

Thought it’s supposed to represent someone who’s been through trauma

Classic evidence of sca-racism

Wondered this myself for a long time. It’s subtle shade promoting the idea that “good looking” people, as defined by Hollywood, are good humans, while “ugly” or scarred individuals are evil.

NPR Cookie Consent and ChoicesA few years ago, an abusive ex from decades ago hunted me down on social media. He would not f off and tried to gaslight me about abusing me. 21 years of quiet, but after his divorce he came looking for me. And I couldn't get an order of protection. It's truly a shame, we live in such a tumultuous world 🌎!!! I survived an abusive relationship and am safe now, but every once and a while, I still have nightmares where I feel so helpless. For DomesticViolenceAwarenessMonth I talk a little bit about my story on my blog: There's hope out there.
