After a 14-year-old girl didn't get the spots she wanted on her high school teams, she posted on Snapchat: 'F*** school' and 'f*** everything.' Now, she's at the center of a Supreme Court case on whether schools can punish students for off-campus speech.

They have no right to censor her speech on her own time.

Portraying this as a 'mean girls' case insinuates that the girl was harassing other students.

Yikes.

Still frustrated about the Mean Girls framing. Really? NinaTotenberg this is not bullying and it really just demeans young women and cheerleading. I realize a lawyer used this but NPR doesn’t need to name the story this way.

what asshole snitched

Both categorical positions are absolutely ridiculous. There is certainly speech that can be made remotely that will interfere with other students’ ability to learn and is closely enough tied to school activities that it could be subject to discipline. This sure as hell ain’t it!

A school should not interfere in a student or staff’s social life outside of school. However,if it is mentioned the school should have a say in it.

If teachers can lose their jobs for what they say outside of school, shouldn't foul-mouthed kids lose their place on the team for the same reason?

b0nG HiTs 4 jEsUS !

The wildest part of this story to me is the school just refusing to take the L. Deciding to be known as the school so draconian it went all the way to the Supreme Court over a swear word.

She has the right to say whatever she wants on social media but what she says may have consequences. And she signed a contract. She broke her end of the contract. It's a good thing she learned this lesson in HS instead of losing employment later in life.

Fuck the School and the Supreme Court

Who cares what students say off campus as long as they aren’t making threats of harm? Schools aren’t the bad word police after hours.

So are we going to hold our public officials for the same behaviors that is setting an example? Many of the elected officials have said way worse. Shouldn’t they be held to the same standards? Interesting

I got banned from my high school post-graduation when I wrote a one-star Yelp review about the place 🤣 But that place was horrible so I don't take it back lmao

If we punish every upset teenager for comments on social media that wasn’t threatening we might as well hang a red flag with a sickal.

Police state dystopia

That’s stupid. Of course a school can’t punish students for anything done outside the school property. It’s not their jurisdiction. If she’s broken the law, it’s a matter for the police. If not, it’s just social justice bullshit as usual.

For those who are unable or unwilling to click the article, the title came from here:

Well if it's made all the way to the supreme court, I hope they will protect the girl's right to free speech.

Ridiculous hell world

She was NOT suspended from school. I repeat: she was NOT suspended from school. She was suspended from the cheer team only. Read. The. Story. Before. Commenting.

Given Kavanaugh's high school shenanigans (and rapes!) I don't think it's appropriate that he be judging this case. Or do rules only apply to girls?

freedom of opinion. no? her choice to run her life. why does the scotus care?
